Andrea Klarin? Use of color as well as shaping?

Okay, I am puzzled with this. I understand that the lighting plays the main role here, but also I'm fascinated by the retouch process.

What I've noticed:

When skin is in a shadow, it's desaturated.
Colored make-up, such as lipsticks, blushes, hair and clothes are saturated.
There are little to no true blacks through most parts of the skin, and the light falloff is dramatic.

Question being.

How do they get those strong contrasting blacks and whites?
I suppose they paint them in on a separate layer in normal mode?

How does skin look so smooth in some areas?
Do they sample the color for an area and just paint it in in low opacity at normal mode???

I am baffled?

All of this could and likely will have a curve applied just to the skin to increase contrast, as well as an overall contrast curve or similar. There's nothing complicated going on

One more thing. Notice something in eyes? A reflector, tool that is so simple, yet powerful at the same time. The distinct, subtle fill-in light in darker parts of the skin comes from a big white or silver reflector placed directly in front of the model.

Yeah, I do understand that it's the most basic techniques, after all, all there is to retouching is h/l/s, but, Iwas more interested in the "rules".

I see that they "flatten" when DNBing, and flatten by lighting up dark areas, I als osee that the accentuate the hair and clothes by putting more saturation into it...

Obviously there is lots of fill light in each and every one of these. He mostly uses strip boxes and places them on the floor in fornt of the model.

Might be a strip box as well, low power though.
