Re: who to create this effect

I created something sort of similar and with some experimentation could be adapted.
Some of the shape was created using a displacement map - the map was a simplified version of the image.
Additional shape was added using the another simplified version with blend mode set to 'screen'
Additional shape was added by warping/puppet warp/liquify flames on top.
I used smart objects for all for maximum tweakabilty.

hope this helps.

Hi shift studio,

Thank you for the reply I will take a look at your images and get back to
you, I need to try this out first. On the outset it looks like a complicated
process to recreate, but an intresting challenge non the less.

Re: who to create this effect

I would go with smoke brushes at various opacities and adjusted dynamic settings. This is done, of course, on separate layer, then, take the brushed effect into Liquefy to shape it. If needed, then a quick play with the Warp tool should enhance the overall effect. Or, you may start with a picture of smoke cloud then do the liquefy and warp.

I would not care about the exact color of the brush just yet, an adjustment Solid color fill layer or two or three at various modes (softlight, color, overlay, light dodge, etc) will do the trick, you might also utilize gradient map and or curves to fine tune it.
