Re: can i create a saturation mask with a gradient

is this what you want?

For CS4 and above use alt + ctrl + 2 on the PC (opt + cmd + 2 on the Mac)to get a luminosity selection.... OR
Go to channels... Ctrl click on the gradient thumbnail to make selection.... back to layers select the layer you want the mask... click on the mask icon

Re: can i create a saturation mask with a gradient

Sounds like you want to use two masks at the same time. One mask being a saturation mask and another mask to further limit the saturation adjustment to only a portion of the image (blue sky).

To do that, first create your Hue/Sat adjustment layer and add the saturation mask to that layer. Then put that layer in a "Group" and add the second mask (sky?) to the Group.

I don't understand why you are trying to use a Gradient Map to create a mask of the blue sky. There are much easier and better ways.

But if you are trying to adjust the saturation of only the blue sky, just let the Hue/Sat ajdustment do it (with or without a saturation mask). Instead of adjusting the "master" Hue/Sat slider, adjust the blue and cyan sliders. That way, only the blues and cyans will be effected.
