removing stains from b/w photo

Hi. I would appreciate some help in removing dark stains from an old b/w photo which ruin the face on the photograph. They are orange brown in color and have no idea what they are from. This is the only picture I have of my great grandparents.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is my first time here and I am very impressed how everyone pitches in and helps.

You're going to have a lot of work whatever you do, but I'd begin by turning off your green and blue channels, and just working with the red channel.

Then clone, heal, dodge and burn.

Hello

Thank you for your response. Mary Louise fixed the picture for me and it is awsome You would never guess that this picture was damaged it looks wonderful and she did a fantastic job. I am not even sure how you turn off these color channels but I would love to learn how to do that.

Again thanks. and special thanks to Cupcake Mary Lousie
