Opinions on Dave Hill style effects

Being as this is a high-end fashion retouching forum, I'd like to hear what your opinion is on retouching styles such as the Dave Hill effect. Is it "good retouching"? Is it "overly done" or perhaps "too fake-looking"?

What's your opinion?

Re: Opinions on Dave Hill style effects

When it comes to art in general, there is no right or wrong.

Art is all about feelings, how the artist feels about her/his work, how others perceive the work. How the message is being conveyed and received.

If you need someone to tell you if it is good or bad, then, you don't have it.

Asking for C&C on your work, is something else.

It is called "Style" by the way. Retouching, is something else.

I would venture to say that Joel Grimes is currently the "IN" thing! I could be wrong though.

Re: Opinions on Dave Hill style effects

I have a hard time telling any huge difference retouching-wise between Dave Hill and Joel Grimes. Or (God forbid) Jill Greenberg. All three to me look like variations of desaturation + clarity (aka midtone contrast enhancement) + "surround-sound" lighting Actually, Joel Grimes' images are more saturated than the other two, that's one difference I see.

Please clarify if that's not the case (and if I don't have to read 2600 responses to a single post LOL) I'm always eager to understand retouching better, whichever style.
