Blotchy uneven skin man

Hi everyone

I am working on a retouching piece of a man as a test and I need to find out the best method for getting an even skin tone.

The highlights are very harsh and have a pretty nasty effect, without looking unrealistic.

I've uploaded the affected area as an example

Wow, that's pretty amazing.

What techniques did you use and are there any tutorials to achieve the result that you have?

Cheers

he used soft light dodge and burn, and inverted high-pass. Don't know how I knew that - I just do. Do a search for them.

For Soft Light Dodge and Burn, create a gray fill layer as follows: hold down Alt while clicking on the Make New Layer Icon. Choose Soft Light in the drop-down menu. Check the box for fill with 50% gray. Grab a soft, small brush with 100% opacity and 3% flow (air brush). Dodge with white and burn with black. You can toggle between black and white by pressing "x". You should use one soft light layer for relatively large areas of blotchiness and one for pixel level D&B.

For Inverse High Pass, here is a good tutorial. The only deviation in the tutorial that I would suggest is to use Vivid light rather than Overlay.

There are a lot of ways to approach such a thing. This one really doesn't look bad to me. I think the main thing early on is to learn not to overdo it.

Nice technique, I'm late on that one.
