Hi Mantra, you can find Tony's complete tutorial here:

http://goodlight.us/writing/saturati...satmask-1.html

and you will need to install optional Photoshop plugins from here:

Re: difference vibrance/saturation mask?

Hi Mantra, I bought Tony's pdf-book few years ago and I do not think it would be fair to describe how that action works here ... Tony's pdf is not expensive and you will get these actions too .. I use his method often and I can say that I got what I paid for :))

Regards, Filip

Re: difference vibrance/saturation mask?

As you see in that "confusing" thread on the Adobe forum, there are many methods to create a saturation mask.

All of them work by varying the saturation change of an adjustment layer. The resulting mask will cause the increase of saturation in some areas to be greater than in other areas. Their goal is to increase the areas with low saturation more than areas with higher saturation. That is the same thing a "Vibrance" adjustment does. The various methods are different only in the way they treat low saturation areas vs. high saturation areas.

For example, one method may increase a low satruation area 30% and a high saturation area only 10%. Another method may result in a 30% vs. 20% range. Yet another method may result in a 30% vs. 5% range. There is really no way to say which one is best. It depends a lot on personal taste.

I prefer the optional HSB/HSL plugin filter of Photoshop. That is because the grayscale values of the HSB/HSL mask will match the "Saturation" values of the Photoshop color picker. None of the other methods do that.

To get the HSB/HSL plugin go here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/plug-ins-photoshop-cs61.html

Once you have it installed, do this:

1. Dupe the background layer, or if you have a multi-layered document stamp a new merged layer.
2. Run the HSB/HSL filter on that layer, input=RGB, output=HSB (and see a wierd, ugly display!).
3. Go the channels pallet and control-click on the Green channel (which has the Saturation values).
4. Delete the wierd looking layer, you don't need it anymore.
5. Do a Select/Inverse.
6. Add your Saturation Adjustment layer (Hue/Sat, Channel Mixer, Selective Color, etc.) and make your adjustments.
7. Toggle the mask on and off to see its effect.

The saturation mask will be automatically added to your adjustment layer. The Select/Inverse step is necessary because the HSB/HSL filter creates a Green channel mask that is backwards from what you really want.

Also, here is a 10 min video about saturation methods you may find interesting:

Mantra, As creativeretouch has said...Tony thoroughly and simply explains the process of how to create an action and/or mask and the use of the different masks ... maybe this link will be more helpful: luminosity masks tutorial... After reading each page click the next button at the bottom of the page.. it is all explained within these pages
