I make a test with brush setting: Nomal and Linear Dodge and paint in black mask but don't see different.
I'll tell you what I do. first linear dodge just means I can set a dark color and have it build up slowly. It's different from going over it at low opacity. Try filling a blank layer with black and painting with that brush mode and a very dark swatch such as 10,10,10 repeatedly to get an idea how it works. I don't like the way multiply is implemented in photoshop, so I avoid it for most things. I really hate screen, so I don't use that at all. It's too inconsistent across its range, and I hate inconsistency.

I don't think it matters so much which method you employ, what matters are great results. A client will not care how your file is set up, only that the work is fantastic. In other words, the "correct" method is the one that you're comfortable with and produces great results.
