I am software engineer, let me tell you, coding is not predictable nor the environment is controllable!

Why no one believes the OP? I have the same issue due to the same cause. what is it that is hard to believe about it? It has nothing to do with retouching and all to do with devoting too much time to whatever it is you are doing.

I often wonder why by now software development isn't a simpler process. I understand Apple has developed a new language (Swift), FWIW. I don't code, so...

I totally agree plugsinpixels that we all would run into this problem. And so it seems, we either need a partner who totally understands, or we need no partner at all! lol

The last time my wife complained about my time at the computer, I said, "Sure, I'll cut back. Of course, we'll need to send you back to work to compensate." Smoothed things out right away.

Re: How can I be a devoted retoucher and have a gf

Well the world is changing and something commonly referred as "flexible working hours" is becoming increasingly popular in a lot of jobs. Effectively, a traditional 9-to-5 model is fading and I suppose it will be in minority in a few years to come (at least in tech-related jobs). This is largely due to companies working with clients across all timezones, tight deadlines, etc.

I try to stick with the "zen" approach which goes like: there is no such thing as a work-life balance because work is your life, too, you're not unplugging yourself from the real life, do the repetitive machine tasks and then go back again. And if so, change your job as quick as you can.

I consider myself lucky as my wife shows great interest in what I do, I mean she was always curious how a model gets to look like on the cover of a magazine, that little peek behind the scenes is always interesting to get a better perspective.

I mean, for all of you guys retouching is not only a job but a passion too and if someone can't go along with someone else's passion which is neither self-destructive or dangerous she or he is gonna have a hard time living together. Sad but true.

You are blessed. Stay as you are! I stumbled across this and had to register just to say this: I can totally identify with your situation, Merrit. It's heart breaking, no woman can handle our shit even if she pretends she can!
