Nah, my objection is much more small-minded than that. It's simply the wrong term. It's like calling blur "monitor shake" or cropping "moving closer". You can clearly see the logic chain, but it isn't correct, and would certainly make the learning curve steeper than necessary.

The film industry can fend for itself, I'm doubt we're any threat to them.

Re: Please don't call it color grading

Upon further reflection, perhaps some poor souls are trying to make what they do sound more "impressive" by borrowing ill-fitting terms from a field with more fans.

So, with puffery in mind, selective blur could become "rack focus" and a crop would become a "dolly move". Either of these makes as much sense in Photoshop as "color grading".

Re: Please don't call it color grading

I'm with you on this Doug but if and when enough people call it colour grading, in due course, that's what it will become. Images are multi purposed these days anyway so there is bound to be some migration of technique and terminology. It was ever thus.

Re: Please don't call it color grading

I also don't call it 'colour grading'. In my estimates/invoices I call it an 'image treatment', which is basically changing and enhancing the colours, saturation, contrast, exposure etc.

@ rudym - in my experience, 'colour correction' is ensuring there are no colour casts, things are balanced in a very neutral way, usually, think 'daylight' vs 'early' or 'evening' if its outside. Images are not overly cool or warm. Also included is the 'press-optimisation' portion - shadows aren't going to 'plug' on-press, highlights aren't going to 'drop-off' on-press etc. Images for catalogues need 'colour correction', images for fashion editorials get a 'treatment' + 'press-optimsation' for example.

just my 2 cents
