Great write-up, Emily. I do restoration as hobby rather than retouching but I picked up some useful tips from your article.

BTW in the 1st sentence, I would write 'aim at' capturing ... or 'aim to capture'. Just a tip.

Photographers aim capturing beautiful images of people and places

Emily,

Nice overview.

In some instances it may be better for color toning to be done before retouching - that depends on two things - the image and personal preference.

In the print industry we can reduce the need to add noise to smooth gradients by creating the gradient in the final output color space. If we do decide to add noise it is usually no more than 1 pixel faded to 50%. Most banding issues happen due to conversion from RGB to CMYK, but even if you are working in Adobe RGB and the final output is sRGB, creating the gradient in the final space will help reduce banding.
