Although Microsoft has previously confirmed the existence of Vista SP1 -- and a company spokeswoman repeated that today -- it's not ready to talk about a release date

From what I'm told XP SP3 is delayed until 2008, so I would expect Vista SP1 to be delayed too

Stepo (Stephen Toulouse) head of MS security team, has also said there will be a Vista SP1 release. I doubt MS would continue to retail a Vista Version that is totally out of date with it's security. They would be leaving customers wide open to abuse from the second they switched on their new system/OS, and customers will not stand for that.
Think if all XP systems retailed now had no updates on. I would say 75% + would get Blaster worm before they got chance to even view the updates site. That would in effect prevent them from getting the updates to block the threat, as it would close their connection with the dreaded 60 second countdown
