Old Photo Question

Hi all,

I posted this photo in restoration for help... but I also have a question I'd like to ask the photography pros.

This old photo, early 1940's era, almost looks 'painted' for lack of a better word. The image of the person blends or brushes right into the background. Why is that? If anyone could answer this question I'd be mighty grateful.

Hi sunfly Your photograph looks that way because a lot of older cameras have shallow depth of field,so not much is in sharp focus.If you look at some of the old hollywood portraits you will notice the face is sharp but as you look past the faces ears or hair start to blur
