July 2007 Photo Assignment -- Competition with Voting

The theme for July was chosen by the winner of our June competition -- SwampDonkey!

Photo Assignment: "Candid"

Deadline for submitting your image: July 27th, 2007 (a Friday) at 12 pm EDT.

The goal of this thread is to inspire more of us to grab our camera and actually use it. New photos are our goal, but we will accept recently photographed/recently processed images that fit the topic also.

If you can share, we'd love to hear when you shot the image, any shooting info you have (shutter speed, ISO, f-stop, filters used, post-processing (normal photo processing allowed - sharpening, adjust exposure -- this isn't the place for art filters [we have forums for that too!])

Feel free to add info about what/where you shot, and why you chose your subject/composition, etc. when you post your image in this thread.

What does the winner get? The winner gets to choose the next assignment PLUS gets all the nice accolades that come from being chosen "Winner".

Post your photo submissions in this thread, and we'll have the separate thread for discussion of this assignment and your comments regarding any of the entries that strike your fancy.

Again, we'll let all RetouchPro members take part in the voting, whether they have submitted an entry or not.

Re: July 2007 Photo Assignment -- Competition with Voting

This pic of a chap grabbing a few minutes' peace and quiet was shot on a Canon EOS 20D with an EF 70-200 f/2.8 L lens (at 200mm). Exposed for 1/500 sec at f2.8 and ISO100.

Post processing done in Adobe Lightroom and finished off in Photoshop CS2.

JPEG compression to get it under 100k has made a noticeable mess of some of the detail, especially in his jacket and on his hands. Could be a candidate for some 'Dragan'-like work too

Re: July 2007 Photo Assignment -- Competition with Voting

This cute little boy just wouldn't sit still while his grandmother and I were at a picnic and photo shoot with the local camera club. I tried all afternoon to get a shot of him. This one when he didn't know the camera was pointed in his direction is the best. Just sign him...NEVER sits still, a typical 4 year old.

Re: July 2007 Photo Assignment -- Competition with Voting

I'm not much of a people photographer, but I don't think "candid" has to mean just people shots.
This shot was taken at the local school I do some IT work for. I asked the pilot if it was OK to stay close as the helicopter took off (so I could get some shots), and he said it was OK and safe. I was on a small banking that was at the side of it. Just as it took off a gust of wind blew it toward me, and it banked over so the blades came down low. As you can see from this last shot, the blades got a bit too close for comfort, as they suddenly came spinning right toward my head
The shot after this was of the sky, as I got blown on to my back as he gave it some power to get higher . Funny how I kept my finger on the shutter, even as I went backward
Bit more of a candid situation behind the camera, but thought I would enter it.
Finepix S5600
Continuous shot mode.
ISO 64
F-stop f/3.2
Shutter speed 1/230 sec

WOW Chris, what a shot and story. You are far, far braver than I am. Thumbs up.

Re: July 2007 Photo Assignment -- Competition with Voting

From Chambers ...

candid adj 1 honest and open about what one thinks; outspoken. 2 fair and impartial. 3 colloq said of a photograph: unposed for: taken without the subject's knowledge so as to catch them unawares in an informal situation.

but as always, it's the interpretation that counts

Re: July 2007 Photo Assignment -- Competition with Voting

Decided to try street photography -- found no one out in the neighborhood or in the parks due to the heat and mugginess, so went downtown where there is activity in the shopping district. After some other efforts, found these men working in the summer heat -- f8 @1/1800 sec., focal length - 63mm. I added a Levels adjustment.
