Post your choices (in this thread) for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd by listing the member's name. If you want to explain your reasons, please do.

Vote for the 3 entries you like the best - you might consider how well a photo captures your attention, how well it deals with the subject, how well it fits with the chosen theme, how well the technical details are handled -- lighting, composition, sharpness, etc., -- you are the judge of what appeals to you and what is important to you in an image and the subject category.

Votes will be weighted to give greater weight to First Place votes than to Second and greater weight to Second than to Third place votes. When you place a vote for First Place, that entry will receive four (4) points; when you place a vote for Second, that entry will receive two (2) points, and a vote for Third Place will receive one (1) point.

My votes --

1st Place - CathyH - Old Mission

I like the look of the photo -- the angle at which the Mission is shot - showing the old fence in front and angling up to get the tower, the framing by the trees. I think it works in showing patriotism not just by having the flag waving in the front, but by depicting a traditional sense of "America".

2nd Place - Smak - flag

Our flag, blowing in the wind -- always love a shot like that.

3rd Place - I'm going with K_Gimini_m's Fireworks

Even though the exposure is not as good as swarbee's image, the fireworks image is almost synonymous in the U.S. with 4th of July and patriotic celebrations, so it fits the theme better for me. Swarbee's image may show love of country, but that is not what jumps out when I look at it - I see beautiful color and sunset that could be a travel photo.

I'd like to complain about how few entries we got this month, but since I never managed to capture a shot to enter, I think I better mutter quietly to myself. I'm glad that we got four images that show different aspects of the symbolism of patriotism.

I'm so sorry there were not more entries.
1. Smak - I like the large flag, I saw one at night the other day and wished I could try photographing it with the spot light on it.
2. K_Gimini_M - This is a good try at shooting fireworks. They are harder than you think to shoot.
3. Swarbees, - I love the color and balance of this shot.

This is the first time I've participated--I didn't know about it before. I joined retouchpro in March so I am relatively new. I do hope this contest does continue and gain interest. Even though I came to RP looking for expertise in restoration, I do love photography and I need to pick up the camera more often. Thank you for the opportunity.
