February 2009 Photo Competition

Theme:

• Color Red
  The Theme was picked by our January competition winner: Janet Petty. And to quote Janet:
  "Since February is Valentines. Let's go with RED."

Entry Period:

• February 2, 20009 to February 26, 6:00pm EST

Voting Period:

• February 26, 6:00pm EST to February 28, 10:00pm EST

Discussion Period:

• February 2, 20009 to to February 28, 10:00pm EST

Voting Tabulation:

• Vote for the 3 entries you like the best by considering how well a photo captured your attention, how well it dealt with the subject, how well it fits with the chosen theme and how well the technical details were handled.

• Votes are weighted to give greater weight to First Place votes than to Second and greater weight to Second than to Third place votes. When you place a vote for First Place, that entry will receive four (4) points; when you place a vote for Second, that entry will receive two (2) points, and a vote for Third Place will receive one (1) point:
  • Entry X (their name) - First Place
  • Entry A (their name) - Second Place
  • Entry C (their name) - Third Place

• In case of a tie, first place will be giving to the person with the most "first place" votes

• If there is still a tie, first place will be giving to the person with the most "second place" votes

• If there is still a tie, first place will be giving to the person with the most "third place" votes

• The winner will be notified and will choose a subject for the following month.

Tips & Rules:

• Be sure to make your entry as large as possible within the forum's restriction: usually less than 100k. Please confirm that the uploaded image is the size you desire.

• Each member may submit only one entry for this competition however, you may change your entry (by submitting another entry in its place) up until the deadline.

• The goal of these friendly competitions is to inspire members to grab their camera and actually use it. New photos are our goal, but we also accept recently photographed/recently processed images that fit the topic also.

• The usual "copyright" requirements apply. You must have shot the picture or have the rights to it. Honor system applies.

• Since this is a learning forum, we'd love to hear any shooting info you have, shutter speed, ISO, f-stop, as well as any photographic post-processing: cropping, levels, saturation, dodge/burn, etc.

• This is NOT the forum for photo art filters or art programs - let's keep the photos looking like photos.

• Entries may be deleted if they do not meet criteria (nudity, photo art, etc.), but we do not encourage arguing about entries -- the voters will decide which images they prefer.

• What does the winner get? The winner gets to choose the next assignment PLUS all the accolades that come from being chosen "Winner".

• Post your photo submissions without commentary. There is a separate thread for discussion of this assignment as well as your comments regarding any of the entries that strike your fancy.

• All RetouchPro members may take part in the competition and all members may vote, whether they have submitted an entry or not.

Here is my entry

Camera: Nikon D70s
Lens: Nikor 18-70mm

I was 'attempting' to utilize the multiple exposure feature in my Nikon D300 at a local grocery store flower shop. The store folks were okay with me taking pics, but the in-camera multiple exposure experiment failed miserably.

In reading the rules it appears combining 2 photos in Photoshop using layer masks is not outside the scope of what's permissible, so that's what I did. Cropped and added some saturation.

Nothing spectacular photo-wise:
* Nikon D300, 18-200mm VR
* On camera flash
* f/4, 1/60
* ISO 200
* Multiple exposure setting
* Zoom ~ 180mm (35mm equiv)

didn't mess with color---just lucked out with overcast day and even lighting

This is one of my wife's red roses (still on the bush) in our front yard at sunset. The black background was created by the shadow of our house and not artificially. No post process cropping. Used PS Camera Raw to adjust saturation; for output sharpening and then used PS to add text and save for web.

I don't know what I was thinking when I said RED. So many things are red; but finding something was more difficult than I imagined.

Canon 40D
24-105 lens effective focal length of shot was 80 mm
1 second exposure

ISO 400

Post processing consisted of darkening the corners, cropping (ya gotta love the 3/2 crop sensor), and sharpening. Took a little bit of the yellow out of the reflections on the aluminum (don't know where it came from anyway ).

Hi everyone this was fun to work on. My camera came back from the repair shop, the pop up flash stopped working and it was still under warrant.
So now that it is back, I set up this still life using a couple of different flashes to practice and make sure it was working again.
