A photo i took of a rosebud in my parents garden in southern Spain, backdrop are the hills surrounding the villa, my mother loves it because it's so simple...

This is the original shot from the camera where there is much more detail, may be this one is better?

Hi,

I liked the first one but I wasn't sure about the mountains. They didn't seem to have enough shape and form. At first glance I thought it was frost on a window.

The second picture is fantastic. The background has enough detail that you recognize what it is but is not strong enough to overpower the rose.

If I might be so bold as to suggest you try putting a bit of that essence back into the black and white.

Just some thoughts from a friend.

Very simple and elegant I think it would look great in a nice small frame as a filler picture with other décor.

i'm a bit stuck for backgrounds at the moment, still layed up with broken ankle, more definition, may be a tree line or something else is needed i agree, it's all subjective i want to retain the narrow depth of field though.
Second pic is one of my best, stands out in it's own right and i'll leave it like that lol
This is the same rosebush, but taken in winter when i caught the rose with frost, it had wilted by the evening....

Both are good, in the first I would have brought out the mountains a bit more. The second is a better picture as the rose is the center of attention.

I have seversl photos of roses some with bad backgounds, but roses are "elegant" within themselves.

yes the frame needed changing so resorted to the "safe" drop shadow on white, works on some not others
For a change from roses, here's a Spanish Geranium also:
