Sun dogs

I thought it would be interesting if we could share a thread of this occurrence (maybe not, but I find it fascinating). I think the scientific term is called a parhelion or sun dog.

In my lifetime (so far) this is the only one I've ever noticed and was fortunate enough to grab a camera before it was gone. Being an amateur astronomer, I have a tendency to look up, even in the day time.

No doubt some of the color dissipated before I was able to snap the image. It lasted about 15 minutes.

The image is unaltered, no post processing.

Re: Sun dogs

Lovely photo! Sometimes I see them through my window tint, but not with my naked eye! We travel a lot through Colorado and New Mexico and see Sun dogs quite often there. Also we see some amazing clouds there called lenticular clouds!
