Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion Flotsam - may I make a suggestion? I think if you straightened your photo it would have more impact. I like the idea, and I think cemeteries are very interesting places.

Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion Thanks for your comment Cathy. I left the angle of the shot exactly as I took it. It looks like it isn't level but there is nothing in this graveyard that is. The ground is slightly undulating and nearly all the graves have sunk to some degree. Some one way, some the other. Difficult to find a level. I know it doesn't look quite right but that's the way it is.

Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion ok, so maybe you could find a spot where it shows the various angles and undulations. I'm not trying to be picky, just suggestions to try again. A little push and encouragement. I'm still looking for something worth posting for this contest. cathy

Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion I don't think you are being in the least bit picky. Yours was a perfectly valid comment and it is appreciated. I suppose I just liked a shot of looking down a pathway and everything just fell in around that. I have quite a few others of that graveyard and may submit one of them. I think we can change our entry. In the meantime I will return and see if I can get a better shot of the same scene.

Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion I've looked at each & every photo...they're great. I didn't contribute so I won't be able to vote, which would be exceedingly difficult under any circumstances. Happy this month to watch & learn.

Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion Who said you couldn't vote? Did you read the rules? The last "bullet" states: All RetouchPro members may take part in the competition and all members may vote, whether they have submitted an entry or not.

Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion Thanks Frank. Should have known better. In another contest here, I'd read this: "Only those with entries may vote." There you go, another case of incorrect assumption. Duh.

Re: July 2009 Photo Competition: Discussion Once again senility has stricken and just today, August 13th did I discover I had won. Wow..... Thanks to everyone who voted as whole, not only for me but for others as well. Diversity of ideas feeds the creative pool and we all learn from these exercises. I was hesitant to submit this image as I was unsure that it could stand on its own without the rest of the body of work included. Once again I have learned to rely on the wisdom of my instructors and mentors before. I was once taught that the truest test of the validity of a body of work, i.e.; photo story, documentary etc. was to view and/or read it's contents while fragmented, or basically view each image alone and if it as a single image can tell the story by itself then it should remain. If a single part of the body is not strong then the body as a whole will not be either most likely.. I think sometimes as artists we become so involved emotionally in our subject that it can become problematic for the body as a whole. I know for me, sometimes my work is like a child and I do not want to let go of it. Although emotions are a great source of insight and creativity, too much emotion can dilute the process. Enough rambling, thanks everyone and I will pass on my September theme to the "powers that be". Chris
