Just google background plate. More a movie making term where the background is imaged without the actors and the actors are imaged against a blue screen. They are later combined for the scene. One more thing is to have all models wear a skull cap so hair can be added later.

One really good way to cut retouching costs, is to get a beautiful flawless model and have outstanding lighting. Oh yea, and use a really expensive camera. Oppss, that 3 things, sorry.

Nice myth but ... in Beauty: no model is perfect, no lighting is perfect, the bigger the camera more expensive is the retouching.

Lighting and shadow is everything of course, but an impossible feat so it seems.

Get it as close to right in the production phase as possible equals less post production headache. That goes for any photo not just portraits.

I go along with Godmother and Janet,
chroma blue/ green, i guess that is what you mean, is just more pp and costwise erm! lot of people don't have the budget for this kind of studio background set up in the first place..

I've got one way to cut retouching costs... shoot to sell, don't shoot to edit. The only thing I really do to my images is bring out the blacks just a hair to get rid of the haze over the image, and retouch the eyes in the close-ups when needed. Also blemishes which doesn't take long at all.
