Baldy, I think that this is called ironweed. Does it have a purplish flower at the heart of the mess on the outside?

The attached picture is of an immature ironweed. Sorry for the quality. It was taken years ago with a small point and shoot.

Not as pretty a weed as your Ironweed... this one just has a few white flowers low on the stem and this seed pod that dries up and drops... It is a real scraggly plant.. the pictures make it look much better than real life! I have no idea what it is .. this one escaped being pulled up by being hid out in the corner... now that a lot of the pods have dropped I guess we will be busy next year eradicating them... want me to send you some seeds?

Craig - well with your retouching skills I'm sure you can make something out of your vacation pictures
Flotsam - Very nice
OLBaldy - I always called that 'Queen Anne's Lace'. Tons of it around here.

well with these two I'll say, the light was terrible but I needed the exercise so I grabbed my camera and went for a walk

Thank you.

I had better luck today. I understood the theory but didn't know which buttons to push on the flash. So I'm breaking down the learning process into smaller steps.

If it's Queen Anne's Lace, here's a link to a blog that tells why they appreciate it.

The thistle and flutterby is lovely - I don't know what it looked like before processing, but the light was good enough to show the detail very nicely. The Queen Anne's Lace is lovely and I love the perspective and the beautiful sky background - glad you "grabbed your camera".

We get it quite a bit in winter.
I like it but it tends to close the Airports

Flotsam, this is a wonderful picture. The name of the boat, the fog, the promise of dawn. It really has great atmosphere.
