Flotsam, I agree. The sharp details against the fog and the faint tilt-shift effect are great

Well then you would be crazy about Holland

I Went to the University of Utrecht's botanical garden yesterday to see a summer butterfly exhibit.

I thought I'd try out the 100 mm lens on the SLR (Canon 40D). The exhibit was 'small scale' but a terrific thing to do on a gray rainy day. It's was a great place (meaning it took my 11 yr old away from computer games for a couple hours) and I can't wait to go back when there are blue skies.

I tried to shoot in shutter priority to freeze the motion of the speedy little buggers - but it was rather dark so that forced the aperture wide open - so many of the captures had too shallow a depth of field. :-( But I also (attempted, LOL) to use the fill flash and some of those weren't too bad.

The attached are just JPEGS made from the RAW files, no PP, I'm sure I can really make them sing with a little bit of retouching.

Taken from the jetty in Diamond Harbour.
I was waiting for the ferry.
Some sun was just starting to come through the fog.
There was an old guy on board hanging out his laundry and by the smoke coming from the chimney he was probably cooking up his breakfast.

Nancy, not only did you have to struggle between shutter speed and depth of field, but keeping up with butterflies is not always easy. All are nicely done - I'll bet the original sized files will look very nice with a bit of PP. You caught their coloration and patterns nicely. Canon has a very good flash system, so I think you can just learn to trust it on fill flash on most situations. I know, flash still makes me nervous - think about this , think about that...

Thanks Kraellin,
i use a Nikon D3 with the 24-70mm wide-angle telephoto, it's not even a macro lens, but i have to make do and crop. The IQ of both the sensor and lens gives a very good result and may be the tone curve set in camera helps?

Flotsam, i very much like the foggy boats image, don't get fog where i am much if at all, and no 3 butterfly Nasturtium is lovely..

Ahh! got confused there, it was Nancy with the butterfly photo..
