LOL ! I like mantids, but they DO look like aliens from outer space (maybe because one of the 50's sci-fi movies starred Giant mantids, but I think they would affect us like that anyway.) The mama stays near the egg case after laying it, and usually dies during the winter before the babies hatch. They eat garden pests and are a beneficial insect that some folks buy to add to their garden. I'm glad we are much bigger than they are since they are very predatory, but it is safe to pick one up if it flies into your house by accident and place it back outside where it can rid you of mosquitoes, gnats, flies, roaches, etc. (along with an occasional bee or other mantis).

Nasturtium and Olbaldy- I never thought of Queen Anne's lace as an art object, but both your pictures are fantastic. You inspired me to go out to take some shots of my weeds. Did you know there's usually a "rose" in the center of the lace. I'm posting a couple of shots to show you. Nowhere near as good as yours, I don't have a macro lens and my flower mode on my point and shoot is not up to something that tiny so the closeup is rather blurry.
By the way, here Queen Anne's lace is also called Wild Carrot. If you pull it up you'll see why.

A very interesting capture, CJ, for both you and the mantis.

(drooling) Well, I guess if you have to commute to work, it's nice to enjoy the view. Lovely scenic area, Flotsam! Guess that is winter snow on those peaks in the background?

Just got a wee dusting of snow on Sunday night.
Frosty mornings now but that means a beautiful clear day with wonderful winter light.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Yes, I would definitely classify those as macro - love the eyes on that fly! I've always been impressed with good macro shots, but never tried very hard to do them myself. I don't want to be too close to those bees, spiders, or even flies to take their closeup, but I find them fascinating to look at. Good job!

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

CJ-I think bugs are creepy too - makes me want a really long lens, lol. Yay! For big bright hibiscuses
Gary - I agree! Great natural smiles
Craig - that post processing is terrific. Makes it look like a small model boat
Marta - that fly picture is amazing. What are you shooting? (Camera and info)

I'm busy with the last week's holiday pictures. We took tons of panoramas but I'm really disappointing in that they don't really capture the grandeur of the alps the way I would have wished.

This is one I took on the way down - we stopped at a German castle along the way. A storm rolled in while were were there. It was much cooler than the picture lets on. :-(

Hi guys,
I'm really glad that you like it.
I'm relatively new to macrophotography, so I'm still looking for my thing.

Nasturtium - I use canon eos 400d and macro lens canon 100mm f/2.8.

cheers

Interesting variations of the color green and the line/textures on the doors. Is that why you chose to make this photo, or were you seeing something else?

How much can you see in that dewdrop (#3) in the original size image? It looks like it picked up quite a bit of detail in its reflection (or refraction or ... )

Yea, you can see quite a lot in this little drop. Luckily for me it's just gras and soil, not the messy view from my window (I keep grass in flowerpot, just in case my cat is in the mood for something green).
Here is 100%

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

this was shot last year during the ice storm which knocked our power out for two weeks. so, it's not current, but with our current termperatures running steadily above 90 degrees F for weeks now, with some above 100 and a heat index running 110 to 115, i swear looking at this pic makes me feel 10 degrees cooler

Craig - thanks for the refreshing cool-down with the ice laden leaves.

Here's some tiny black ants feasting on a mini-chunk of a canned peach. I wanted them to stay full and busy since they're near the baby dove that is still not ready to fledge. Baby birds and ants are not a good mix - for the birds.

nice ants, CJ. fascinating little critters, arent they?

orandz, i'd suggest focusing on the center of those flowers more or increase your depth of field a tiny bit. with just the tips of the petals in focus it's a bit odd.

Always like to hear a happy ending to a story...the dogs probably disagree about the "happy" part.

I like the backlighting on his ears.

Had an earthquake centred about 50kms from my place at 4.35am on Saturday.
This is the scene that greeted me in one of my rooms.
Quite frightening.
Was intending to get stuff off shelves and do a bit of a spring clean that weekend.
Didn't have to.

Oh my Flotsam!
Sky news was just mentioning that the earthquake was responsible for inducing the births of a record number of babies in your maternity units..

Anyway - back to the serious business of mouse photography - we seem to be having a minor epidemic of mice and i rescued this one from the jaws of our fluffy carnivore cat Yoda this morning - remembering trees make good backdrops i placed it in our Willow out of harms way and snapped away with the 24-70mm, this one's a rather leaner specimen than 'fatso' the other day and i must say i'm very pleased with the result - just wished it was a chameleon or some other exotic creature lol

Thought of you and the few other NZer's on here - glad you weren't home in that chair when the quake knocked your bookcase over. I've never been in one - would find it frightening also. Also don't like housework...

I know that Yoda disapproves of your choice to turn the mouse into a model instead of his meal. Cute mouse. Hope he got out of the tree before the rat came.

Thanks for your thoughts.
We are known as "The Shaky Isles" but this area has never been thought of as an earthquake risk. Lots of damage in Christchurch City where I work and many people will lose their homes. No loss of life though. I'm staying with friends as I still have no power supply.

I googled "Shaky Isles" and found that you're part of the Ring of Fire - hadn't realized that. Loss of home is huge, even if they're insured. Glad you have friends you can stay with till power is restored. When I was a kid, I looked in an encyclopedia at the main weather or situational threats - earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and was relieved that I lived in Arizona where there was little danger from any of them. Decades, later, I'm still relieved.

Great focus and fur detail ! I'm with Palms - "much cuter than a chameleon" although chameleons are cute also. My parents never thought the field mice were "cute" when we opened up the "summer cabin", but I thought they were one of the best parts of going to the cabin.

Do you have chameleons running around loose there? We only see them at fairs and zoos.

The initial quake was 7.1 I think. We've had over 100 after shocks of varying degrees.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

wow. a big one then. i've been in a few 4's but never one that big. the really scary part to me is, we take the ground NOT MOVING for granted. thus, when it does start to move....holy crap! that is disconcerting!

took this one the other day. i believe this is a great blue heron. we get a couple fairly regularly on our lake but hadnt ever seen one on the overflow pipe before. they usually just wade around the edge of the lake. and, notice how much of the pipe is sticking out, too. been VERY hot and VERY dry this summer!

oh, and because the temperature is changing now, there is a bit of steam coming off the lake there. also, i had to sharpen this a bit in psp because these birds are extremely skittish of people, so i had to take this at full magnification of the lens, 26x optical... hard to get a totally great focus at that range and hand held.

Andy, your daughter and your image is lovely. (had to google Loretta Lux to remind me about that look - happy you didn't choose that). The pose, the light, the color coordination all make for a delightful photo. Your wife and daughter are lucky to live with a pro photographer so they will have high quality family memory books.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Flotsam - your Lyttelton harbour picture - nice unity of color and great dynamic diagonal lines
- earthquake, wow.
orandz - cat grass - fabulous DOF and sharpness
- some flowers - love those bright colors and the unusual abstract framing - so much more interesting than a whole bloom centered smack dab in the middle of the frame
Craig - those frost covered pine branches are reminiscent of frilly lace
great blue heron - that is one amazing zoom
CJ Swartz - Oh! You are such a softie...leading those voracious ants away with that peach
Gary - yeah! That is terrific creamy bokeh behind that bug
Mr. Ratty - I don't like the thought of a rat but he's kind cute up there. You really caught a great variety of shots
bokcheelo - nice retouch, her skin is flawless now
andyong - she's adorable, love all that soft green

my first image is of some lit balloons floating on a lake, it was a weird night to say the least.
the second orange one is waaaaaaay out of focus but I really like the round bokeh created by the setting sun shining through the holes in the buoy
and the last is me farting around with classic still lifes again

nancy,

lovely pics the balloons one is lovely and a bit surreal. i like it! and the buoy, that's quite some orange going on there. but, the masterpiece in this lot is your last one. i've stolen it and am going to do some photo-art with it. did you set that all up? you just keep on 'farting around'

I set it all up. It's a mock up of a painting I saw in a restaurant.

if you wait a sec I'll put a SOOC version in the photo-art section. The one attached here is mixed with a texture...

Lovely, Palms!! The quality of the diffused light thru the petals is especially lovely on those in the top 2/3rds of the image, and maybe just a little darker at the bottom edge (might be me). I hope you do shoot some more since it works well for you... except when Mr Peeps is around... < 0\p

And yet they get all precious about the food they are supposed to eat- go figure! Your flowers are exquisite though Palms, I think you've done a beautiful job there.
CJ- I raise orphan doves and pigeons, so it goes without saying I think your little fella is adorable heee.
Andy- Cute little girl you have there! You've done a superb job with the colours in that shot- looooove that soft green. I don't feel that the upper latch part of the door is too distracting...for me at least I rather like that detail, I found the black (cable?) thingie in the top right to be the main distraction.
Nancy- I always love to see the results of your "farting around". Good call on the out-of-focus lantern the effect of the sunset really makes that image- dreamy abstract.

I just got myself a new camera. I caved in and finally retired my old film SLRs in favour of a Canon 550D with a 55-250mm lens and I've gotta say I am already noticing a few things I'll have to relearn I guess with regards to my shooting habits- exposure setup/management for one and the freakin' auto focus that I guess I'll have to get comfortable with to get that pin sharp focus in shallow DOF shots that I love, and all the different priority settings...never had any of that before- my film SLRs were mostly manual affairs and my focus er... I went though a lot of film LOL! Down the track I plan to invest in a couple decent prime lenses, especially for macro work.
Anyhoo, just out of the box and to my absolute glee my first victims are a trio of Rainbow Lorikeets, but a small sample of the few different types of stupidly colourful birds that come to my yard for a free feed.
I'm chuffed at how they turned out- I used a polarizing filter on my lens to kill much of the glare and that did a lovely job with the colour overall so post the images only really needed some exposure tweeking and cropping. Now I'm eagerly waiting for next lot of "practice targets" to fly in....

wow, those are gorgeous, littlecoo!

you'll like digital. most decent digital slr's will allow for manual use. even my little kodak 981z has manual controls for just about everything, focus, aperture, f-stop and so on. you may have to download a manual in order to find everything, though

Yum! I'd say that you hit that focus very well, and I love that DOF. You can still shoot manual all you want - only now you can see how great they are a bit sooner, and get "chuffed" sooner. I've never had Rainbow Lorikeets in my yard (Palms - our cats probably make that a bit unlikely), and I'm looking forward also to the next lot of "practice targets" that fly into your yard. I think you're going to enjoy seeing those results right after you shoot them, and the room in your fridge now that you don't have to keep your film cool.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Hey Craig, I did ride my bike along the entire Eastern Shore of Lake Michigan years ago and it is pretty. The dunes there are wonderful. The Wisconsin side has a few areas of dunes but nothing like Michigan. What's even worse is that the prevailing westerly winds blow all the warm surface water over to the Michigan side of the Lake. A double travesty.

But Wisconsin has the Packers and we will prevail against the Lions Sunday

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

now back to flowers and cats

I thought i would show you what could possibly be the smallest sunflowers ? i know people try to grow them tall (at least 25feet in some cases ) well these are only 7 inches and 10 inches tall !

and the last one is Peeps who at 6 months has been "done" and is allowed out now ! !

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Oooh, Peeps is very handsome! You captured a cute expression.

The midget sunflowers are interesting - do the heads follow the sun like tall sunflowers do?

Your bravery in photographing the spider is duly noted. I find them more interesting to look at thru a lens also - as long as I am out of jumping distance...
