A style well-worth re-visiting! Love the highlights, the skin tones, and the composition. We are lucky that you share your works with us - very enjoyable and well-done.

How are you getting the dragonflies to alight and sit long enough to get these fabulous shots? Every dragonfly I see is zooming around at lightspeed.

They do drop out of warp speed sometimes - you just need a lot of time on your hands - i play 'Sade' tracks in the garden, may be the music sends them into a trance

Good idea. A trance would be helpful.
I had a friend who wanted to photograph a treefrog in a certain position and it wouldn't cooperate so she put it in her freezer long enough to stun it, took it out and finally got an awesome picture. I'm glad to hear you don't resort to such trickery.
Your photos are wonderful.

About this bee, Algarve. Does the bee have blue wings and what did you shoot that at. Pretty darn fast thats for sure.

ok gary, i've been posting in the gallery on your submissions, but i expect some techniques posted here. that D&B and layers on the fisherman and those other things you mentioned. i expect an essay of 500 words or more within 24 hours and... oh wait, uhm, oh.... not in school are we. uhm, if you'd be so kind as to share some of the techniques in the post-processing...

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Not a good photo - but it's the best photo of a wild owl that I've ever taken. (The only better ones were of rescued owls, and I could take their portrait in the daylight.) This (Great Horned, I think) owl has recently taken up residence in our neighborhood, and when I was walking my dog (bigger than owl-prey size dog) late tonight, I heard the owl up on a lamppost. Couldn't see it because of the bright light of the lamp, so I focused on the silvery bar of the lampost and hoped for the best.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Hi Phil,
yes the Bee is a Mediterranean type, the wings have a blue florescence depending on the amount of sun shining on them, shutter speed was 1/1000..

Ok Craig,
give me some time and i'll start jotting down some of the details, everything changes each time i open an image lol!

'Saturday Bee'
1/800 / f:6.3 / ISO 400 / FL: 70mm
Lightroom into CS5 - micro contrast in Topaz detail, selective highpass (overlay blend), noise reduction on background mosquito window net and addition of ethereal lighting on background creating shadow leaf shapes then faded with a mist and pale yellow hue (nik) gradient..

This is a re-edit of an image i took a while back contrasting more with light and shadow - mostly dodge and burn with neutral density gradients..

lightroom and topaz... dont have either of those and that last bug shot is pretty incredible!

i also like your beach scene. when you dodge and burn do you do the gray overlay first and d&b on that or just a straight d&b or something else?

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Yes i create a 50 percent gray overlay layer and d and b on that at 3 - 5 percent also use the black and white colours and just straight d and b, depends how i feel and what the results are lol!
For the fisherman and dogs i converted to black and white with channels and faded the bottom half colour back in at may be 35 percent and left the top desaturated then went over with fog / mist graduated filters from 'NIK' including lastly a coffee one for the sky to keep with the overall colour of things and painted in the boat on the horizon from an earlier snapshot :-)

I think you did great under the circumstances. Just to take a night shot and actually get a picture is a great accomplishment as far as I'm concerned. And the owl came out really well.

an edit i did last night replacing a bland sky, D and B, micro-contrast and gradient filtering to get a more dramatic effect with the mass of concrete..

Reminds me that the annual Pow-Wow is coming up here. Nice images - where are the Indians from - Spain, U.S., elsewhere?

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

hawkeye,
your last one is almost a painting by itself. very nice!

gary,
you know i'm a big fan of yours, but i thought i'd give your dreamz one a little more punch. loved the composition but the d&b was a bit bland (to me). i did a fade correction, a tone mapping, some airbrushing, some burning of my own and a curves in there somewhere. now, yours is much cleaner/smoother, so i've added noise inadvertently for the increased contrast and punch. i could do a noise reduction, but i think that would throw it off. so, yours is lower contrast but less noise and mine is the other way around. not sure which is better, but is always fun to look.

Good work Craig,
i like it, just shows i could have taken it a bit further.
Problem was i had only a jpeg image which was starting to fall apart with the processing, i'll give it another go when i have more time on hand - you really did give it a bit of oooomph! lol :-)

I took this photo yesterday. Tons of geese flying all over the place. Sort of reminds me of Michener's "Chesapeake" that I read a while back. Well a few took a break on my beach. My dad would have ended their sojourn for sure.

This way we all get to share in their beauty. Thanks!

Very good shots Andy, i like the editing on both of them..
This shot was taken yesterday down at Fuengirola Marina, last week i noticed the reflection on the water with the setting sun and there were many birds around so this time armed with some bread i coaxed a couple a bit nearer, light was not good so had to use a wide aperture and bump up the ISO a little more to get the shutter speed..

Palms,
I really like the shot with the sparrows. With the thorns and the barbs and various metals, it's a very interesting scene.

Thank you Gary and Shari
the colour of the fungi is what drew me to them, but apparently they are poisonous so no touching
and the metals is what i was going for,but it was the metals behind the birds, i just sort of got sidetracked as usual

gary, that first of three birds is really unusual. it almost looks porcelain or stone or something. did you treat it after the shot at all or is that how it came from the camera? i like it!

Nice images of the Pow wow CJ,
i would have gone for the frontal shot of the kid in that wonderful costume

Thanks Craig,
it looked very different in camera, the sun was low in the sky with reflection off the water giving it an almost albino effect, at first i thought it was a different species, but no i didn't do any special treatment - the other one however (bird almost head on) was crazy, the background was full of boat masts so i replaced the whole sky with a gradient blue which eliminated the 'fluff' :-)

This place near Ronda in Spain is 'uber-cool' and i'll be visiting again soon, it's close to a National bird sanctuary which also has wild horses on it's marshes, a bit like the camargue in southern France.

This is a gorgeous shot. And it sounds like a gorgeous place. What more could anyone want? Birds, wild horses, marshes, dramatic architecture all in one place. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

@Craig:
thanks for your comments in the gallery:-)
The shot you are trying to take with your cam will be limited by exposure if just one is used, bracketed exposure is what you need to be trying if you want more dynamic range.
I went a bit further with the El Rocio shot by merging the sky from a separate shot and although there was a river there, i still preferred to eliminate it and construct a cleaner version with better reflective qualities in CS5 - so image is three parts giving it better dynamic range of exposure..
I can post the very flat original if you like, then you can see visually what developed..
regards,
Gary :-)

BTW: remember this is a retouch site (the best imho) and much of what i learned i gleaned from here :-))

awww, yer a love i really shld change that, shldnt i

gary, i've done a little bracketing and tried one of the free hdr programs, but so far the results have been poor. what ev settings are you using for the three exposures? 1/2 ev, 1/3, 1, or what? and what hrd program are you using? i suppose i'd best look in the hdr forum, eh?

nice mantis. those shots are so crisp. i'm totally envious. what sensor does that camera use?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's Nikon D3 Craig with the 24-70mm lens,
i still don't have a proper macro yet :-(
It's not HDR Craig, the sky is from a photograph of a sunset and i replaced the river water with a new version from a CS5 plug in - the trick is marrying them all up and it's a whole lot easier with a graphic tablet and pressure pen..
If i am bracketing then i'll go for 3-5 shots sometimes 1/2 sometimes 1 and do it manually in Photoshop - personally i don't like how Photomatix renders things and i can get a better effect with either Topaz or Lucis using layers..

I think you may like this next one of the Mantis shot low down in the grass, the other shot is a little quirky, but i like strange and a shot with a red hibiscus..
Have a gr8 Sunday :-)

hi gary,

thanks for the explanations. why bracketing if you're not doing hdr? actually, i think i know the answer, but would love to hear what you have to say.

and yes, those last four are good. i particularly like the first of the three.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

this was taken this fall and for whatever reason, i took it from a long ways away, about 250 yards or so. thus, it was fairly faded, like it was taken in a mist or something, so i had to treat it with some contrasting and a smidgen of paint. that old tree has been dying for several years now and i think this year was his last.

Kraellin.

Thanks for the welcome back.
I tried to upload the image to the photo art forum (using a different name), but it tells me that I have already uploaded it to this forum. Which obviously i did...

Anyone knows how to "circumvent" this so that I can upload it to a different forum?

frank, what CJ said shld work, but try 'save as (completely new name)'. dont use any part of the old name. i know i've posted the same image more than once in these forums. you might also change the file size.

Did try with no success.
It seems the forum, as long as it is the same image and regardless of the name, it recognizes as having been already uploaded.

I wonder if it does a CRC check of the image, or maybe it looks at the EXIF of the image and sees it as being the same as the one previously uploaded...

I wonder...

[edit]
re-saved the image with different compression and it worked. Always learning...

Well I was riding my bike by the equestrian center the other day and took this photo of a depressed horse. At least he looked depressed. Or I felt depressed looking at him. But I photographed it. I gussied up the photo some and sent it to my northern friends in Wi, and Il, and Mn. I felt they could relate more to snow then dirt. I also mentioned that the horse jumped through the frame and bit me while I was taking the photo.

MERRY CHRISTMAS.....everyone.

Exactly !! I have two chairs in front of the computer so that when one of the cats takes one chair, I'll still be able to use one - unless one of the other cats takes that one also... Then they curl up like Peeps and look SO comfy - like you can't disturb them unless you're REALLY mean... If cats could snicker, mine would... Do you hear Peeps make a peep?

Thankfully he isnt that vocal ( yet ?) he just gives me the look of "Do not even think of it " and flexes his claws ! ! ! !

his newest trick yesterday was to get a disc i had just burned out of the tower tray and batter it across the floor and scratching it ! ! ! so i had to start all over again
he sure keeps us on our toes more than the little grand kids ! !

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

We're getting a steady dose rain today in the Seattle area, so I was looking for something to work on "inside" from the comfort of my office. This is a BW version of a shot I took in October.

Palms - you had blue sky!! I take moon shots too, and I like your photo better than many of the night shots. That being said, I love Danny's photo, mostly because of its scenic nature - not simply a shot of the moon, but includes the earthly environment around the area. The moon itself shows off very well also - great detail.

Since I couldn't upload the video here, I'll load a still of one of the gunfighters -- he's playing a bounty hunter

'Dry and Desolate'

Shot last weekend and processed today.
Although the title fits, this is actually a look out tower for the lifeguards on the beach at Benalmadena, Andalucia, Southern Spain.
