Yep cheers Craig - i don't like the clinical look of a lot of macro's so i'm trying to introduce different elements for contrast etc..

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

you're doing a great job

here's one of my own. this is a 17 year cicada. they came out in full this year. they were LOUD! their 'singing' could be heard indoors with the air conditioning going. outdoors, it sounded much like the old power lines when they would hum loudly. cute little critters, no?

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

They are colorful little things Craig, i hear them every night, but i never get so close to photograph one just yet..
It's a good shot - minor point is the background is a little busy. I just submitted one of mine to 1x.com for screening and the first critique i had was i should have got my whole bug in focus ie: focus stacking 10 shots or so while the bug sits there for an hour motionless lol, as if that's going to happen ha ha
How do you know it's 17 years old or am i just being stupid after waking up 10 minutes ago :-))))

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

yeah, the background is a bit busy. i just shoots em where they be. i could edit some of that out or make it even more blurred, but i think the little guy stands out enough that i'm not going to bother this time. but i do thank you for the feedback.

oh, is that what focus stacking is, taking multiple shots of the same thing with each one focusing in a slightly different place? i saw you use that phrase in the gallery and didnt understand what it was. so, you just edit all these 'stacked' images into one to get the full focus on the bug. cool. god help ya if the sucker moves.

there are several different kinds of cicadas around here. there's a 17 year and a 13 year and i'm thinking one more, but not sure. i just happen to know that this one is the 17 year because it's been 17 years since he was seen. their life cycle is 17 years. the stage the picture is of is the fully mature bug. it dies shortly after this and we had a lot of dead protein lying around here after a while. i also know it's the 17 year kind because others were talking about it, as well. i dont know if there are any distinctive marks that set it off from the other types. i just know this is the 17 year variety because i havent seen these buggers in 17 years and others said the same thing real scientific, eh?

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Yep that's what focus stacking is, best done on a "rail" and not a tripod - something i need to invest in at some stage.
I disagree with the critics that it's always necessary, i like to see a gradual blur in the DOF for depth sometimes.
Interesting stuff about the Cicada's i didn't realize they had such a long life span :-)

Just a quicky from the other day i processed this morning..
I like the head on view, but can't make my mind up about the leaf behind which i may remove in post if i ever have time - only one exposure on this as he didn't stay put too long..

IF the leaf you're talking about is the blurred green part of the background, I'd vote for removal just to reduce competition with his body/body color, but if the leaf is the purple part behind him (don't know if he's on a leaf or a petal), I like it. I thought he looked dead in your last one (stuck on in place), so I'm glad to hear he didn't "stay put" and is hopefully alive. He is a cute model. I find mantids to be interesting to look at, but they still bring an almost instinctive chill to my backbone, whereas this little guy just makes me smile.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

i'd remove the purple stalk/leaf behind him. it's superfluous and not blurred enough to be innocuous. add in a nice, dull brown or something like what's next to the leaf on the left or the dulled green on the right..

I think it is more green and brown foliage, anyways i got bored with that one for the moment as it was the last day of a weekly challenge for table top photography, i shot another today - however the bug when i found him on my car had only one back leg so i had to reverse composite two different stances to fill the frame and hide the back hopping leg, i added a coffee and blue gradient - so what i thought would take ten minutes or so actually took a few hours for that challenge, but i really enjoy this stuff :-)

Ah... it's definitely not stuck on, they have tiny hairs in the middle of their legs they use when they cling vertically to a stem - different when they are horizontal :-)
If you take a look at similar Hopper / Locust google images you will see that's how they cling on when vertical which is the problem i had when someone suggested rotating to landscape, it wouldn't look right because they alter their posture.

On t'other one the part i wanted to remove was the purple leaf behind, but now i'll re-think about neutralizing the foliage when i have the time,
cheers CJ

Another shot from Bug Planet,
this cool dude stayed still long enough for 6 exposures so i was able to get him all in focus.
Unfortunately it's lost masses of detail at less than 100kb compression.
Have a nice weekend everybody :-)

Can still see the fine hairs (cilia?) on his body, so you've captured a lot of detail to still have so much visible at 100kb. He stayed for 6 exposures - maybe they are coming to you for their portraits ?

Nice shot Palms i can see where the leaf has been chewed too.
What new thing did you find out with your camera?
I can suggest while on the tripod to use 'mirror up' to cut vibration, use of a remote cable is altogether best for any shot.
This is one i took yesterday, seven exposures to get all the
antenna's in focus

Gary i use a fujifinepix s1800 it has two macro settings, macro which you can use the zoom, and super macro with no zoom, but if you switch the digital zoom on you can use that ! ! I have ditched the shot where i used just super macro there was a lot of difference lol unfortunately there is no way of using a a remote on this camera but i will try using the timer see if that helps with the " shakes"

got to experiment more, just need some time

I quite like the holes in the leaf so i didnt try and "tidy" them up

plus I now need to find a bug that wont move much

hmm we are due some rain maybe a slug/snail on glass with some sugar water

yours is stunning as usual love the mantis shots i think they are my favorite pity we dont have them here , plenty of wasps at the moment but no mantis

Hi Penny cam,
the image is very small, i can't really see any detail at that size?
-------------------------------------------------------------
I do like the holes in the leaf Palms, makes it look natural.
I don't know much about the fujifinepix s1800, is it a fixed lens?
Yep... snails are pretty slow, definitely you'll not get motion blur with that one lol
Also try flash, then you can use a smaller aperture and get more dof :-)

This is a cracker!
it was shot on moss covered wood which the Mantis kinda blends in with so i had to darken the foreground in curves.

It is still there, look between the feelers and there are two eyes and a nose

if you still cant see it, the obvious remedy would be to have a few glasses of wine and look again lol lol
oh and i cant see things in clouds either, although hubby reckons he can see cloaked Klingon vessels ! ! !( just waiting for the men in white coats for him )

Palms
Gary - without a glass of wine, I can see the little face on the mantid's forehead - it's the brown part. You can charge a 2nd sitting fee!

Palms - I love your husband's sense of humor, and will bail him out if he gets picked up by the white coats (blue coats - no, but white coats - yes).

P.S. ... who knows, since they're invisible when cloaked, the Klingon ships could be there...

....Well, let's see... oh, there are two round bumps, next to each other, on his abdomen that do look like eyes...

Nice work - again. Very handsome subject - getting her portrait done for her babies - since they'll never meet her?

Very nice composite, Gary! Did you pre-plan shooting for the composite, or figure it out later that you could make it work? I'm going to work on shooting to create some composites (probably cats rather than macro subjects, tho ). Gives me a lot of new subjects to shoot thinking about backgrounds separately and being able to add a subject (shot against a solid gray background) in later.

The Insects themselves

I thought the probability of two different insects on the same leaf and both being still was a bit high

Very well worked out my little retouching detective, i'm so glad you couldn't find the seem where it was stitched together lol

Yes CJ i was looking at the macro's over at www.1x.com and came across many that made it up for publishing because they had two insects in the frame so i decided to do a few more of these.
When photographing i found if i move the camera back a little on an appropriate leaf or stem i can remove one and place another in a spot to left or right up or under using identical white balance settings and lighting set up - so it all gets a bit more exciting now he he!

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

One of the best sunsets I've ever seen, taken this evening near Victorville CA on the way home from Photoshop World/Vegas. My right hand held the camera up toward the right of the windshield while my left one drove the car... I zoomed wide and aimed the best I could while not hitting anything in front of me! Thankfully the camera focused well, the shot didn't blur but the batteries died just thereafter. But the show was ending anyway.

Meanwhile, this moon and cloud thing was going on on the other side of the car... Tougher to shoot cross-armed.

The shot with the cars in the foreground (which I like compositionally) was a littler bit earlier.

I really need a driver so I can concentrate on shooting! The late afternoon desert and sky are so beautiful. During the day, not so much.

A few more pix from my week in Vegas (more to come; it's late...). From left to right, Ron Paul (I think), Jay Maisel and Mother Nature (this explains the weather lately!).

I love Gary's skill with mantids and crickets, but I'll take looking at an adorable hedgehog over spiders and bugs any day! So they just wander about thru yards? One of the animals that don't exist here in the USA in the "wild" - just as pets or escaped pets.

yes they wander around, especially at this time of the year, unfortunately they are in decline in the wild so need some TLC, they love cat food

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

since nancy has started a new thread, i'm closing this one and will 'sticky' the new one up where this one is. i'm also 'unsticking' this thread. it will now be in the normal section of the threads and since it's closed now it will sink slowly into obscurity... sort of.

you can still view this thread; you just cant post to it any more (unless you're an admin or moderator).
