Thanks for all the help. Ordered my new camera yesterday. I wound up ordering a Nikon
d3100 because I couldn't find a d3000 or 5000 in stock. I'm not sure if I'll ever use the video so I didn't really want it , but you take what you can get. I did wind up going for new rather than refurbished. learn to use it.

Congratulations Shari on your new Nikon, I am sure you will be delighted with it. Learning to use all the features I am sure will be fun .

Like you I would have preferred to leave out the video but this feature seems to be standard now on most DSLR's - still you never know it may come in handy on occasion!
