Handy Tool for Nikon Users

I just found a really handy tool for you Nikon users. If you're ever out without your computer, preview extractor will let you pull the jpeg previews out of your raw files so you can see what you've shot without needing Photoshop or the Nikon native software.

The other really handy thing, and this is the reason I downloaded it, is that it has the ability to decode the shutter count of the camera from the EXIF data. I've never found any other way to do that but to send it to a Nikon Service Center.

You can download it from the author here.

Hope this helps my fellow Nikon shooters. (It is PC only though, but there are lots of pc's around if you don't have one.

Cheers,
Michael

FYI, you can display the shutter count of the camera using Photoshop. The shutter count is embedded in the metadata of raw files. Open a raw file in Photoshop and Select File > File Info... if you have Photoshop CS4 or 5, open the Advanced tab and look for the "Schema (http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux)" section. Open it and look for the aux:ImageNumber entry. This is the number of shutter actuations. If you have Photoshop CS or later, open the "Raw Data" tab and start typing imagenumber into the search field. It'll probably take just a couple of letters to find something like this: <aux:ImageNumber>6510</aux:ImageNumber> The shutter count is the number in the middle.

Just read your post, BobJones, and wanted to say thanks! Very handy to know how to find the shutter count and with software I already use. Also works from Adobe Bridge!
