Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Thanks for following up! That really is a gorgeous shot.

I recommend just a wee little bit more off on the left and, unless a title/headline is going here, more off the bottom. Otherwise the darker elements outweigh the white. IMO of course.

This image also begs for some sort of artsy (white vignette, gentle paint effect, high-key, etc.). Have fun with it! There's a lot of potential there.

Is that a wolf or your dog? Hopefully the latter!

I'm not very artistic. I know you are though, if you'd like to have a go at it I'd be interested to see what you come up with.
That's my boy Einstein. He was a rescue and a stray before that so I'm not sure what he is. He's my best friend and my favorite subject.

It is a nice shot. I'd like it better, though, if I weren't bracing for that same snowstorm, which is due to arrive where I live this afternoon.

On the bright side, maybe it'll bring a photo op or two, as it did for you.

Where is this cold weather? I had to put the air conditioning on in the car today on the way to work! ;-)

I'm in the western suburbs of Minneapolis and it's going to start snowing here in a half hour or so, it looks like. It's not all that cold, though, so it's going to be sloppy.

I finally got to play with this on the desktop! Here are two versions:

1) Cropped as suggested, levels popped and white vignetted with Topaz Lens Effects.

2) Same version with additional processing in PostworkShop (Rough Charcoal Sketch preset) with added saturation to restore fur color. Gorgeous!

3) The same as #2 but erased a bit through the charcoal layer to restore detail in Einstein.

Your photo got me thinking about dogs sitting in the snow. Must be cold-! ;-)

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

Plugsnpixels, Awesome! I like the 3rd one you posted. You were so right, that is a better crop. I don't understand why though. Like I said, I cropped to the golden ratio.

Here is a pic I took today. I am interested to know anyone's opinion on the crop and treatment.

I took the photo with Photoshop in mind. It was cold and I was standing on uneven ground. I shot it at ISO80 so I didn't blow out the sky or snow. It was taken with my walking camera, a Kodak Easyshare. The origional is here. http://www.photoshop.com/users/wmbla...214c796d403464

I hope the link works. BTW, I thought Adobe was moving Photoshop.com to some other site I really didn't like?? Hmm, maybe a lot of other people didn't like it too.

That's a big improvement over the original!

Now, to reduce the "busyness" of it due to the deep focus, try adding bokeh (depth of field) effects to it. First try blurring the background to make the tree at left and cliff at right pop out, then try the opposite.

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

I will try that tomorrow (work ) and repost. The eye does tend to want to run up and down the middle of the pic when what I want it to do is run in a circle around the outer edge, cliff, sky, tree, creek.

On that other pic of the tree and the dog; Can you give me your thoughts on why putting the lower left corner of the golden ratio didn't work nearly as well as what you did?

Re: Photographed TODAY (or Processed today) con't

As for the tree and dog, I just intuitively cropped to the outer limits of the subjects and it worked. In this case, the subject placement and size dictated the final crop, not a pre-ordained rule.

The tree is nearly square overall and Einstein makes up for the rest. Since he is looking away to the left, it was necessary to leave a little extra room there. I was considering how this would play out if he were facing the opposite way. The crop at left would probably be much tighter, since the right side of the tree is clipped already.

And again, if you were using this in a vertical magazine layout, the extra original foreground would have to be included.
