Can you recomend a camera for pole photograhy?

Hello

I'd like to start offering high angle views to my real estate clients. While I often carry an 8' ladder I'd like to be able to get up to about 12' to 15' if possible.

I use a 5DII usually with a 16-35 and it will not be going on any poles. It's too heavy and there would be too much movement, plus I would not want to risk dropping it.

I need :
  • Light in weight
  • 12 megapixel or higher
  • wide angle lens capable
  • remote trigger capable
  • pivoting screen would be nice
  • port for a remote screen would be a dream
  • under $1,000

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

How about a USB webcam attached to any laptop? I just bought a 15MP Logitech for $85US.

I suspect it's interpolating, lots of JPG artifacts at 15MP (I think it's 2MP native), but it should be enough for web shots of real estate (1024x768 max). An alternative might be an iPhone or similar (assuming you already own one). Even if you spend a lot more (up to your limit) I'd go with something very small and light, there's going to be a lot of leverage and wind pull up there.

My neighbour (ex dive photographer) has built a helicopter drone which has a gimbal on which to mount any camera. Controlled by a hand unit with full data readings and GPS, the test results are superb and show great sharp detail at any altitude. Not only useful for property sale photos, but for building inspections, crowd shots, limited access areas etc. A huge potential market.

You might want to take a look at these products. While they do offer remote control of a variety of point and shoot cameras, there is no way to view the photo prior to taking it. But the price is certainly right. http://www.polepixie.com/
