making custom bruessh

I open a new document, type my name, then simplify it, then select it with rectangular marquee, then in Edit select Define brush from Selection. When I use it with the opacity set to 100% with black, it comes out faded grey not dark black. I have tried it without simplifying the text layer and it still comes out faded. Where am I going wrong.

Hi phident,
Do you have your fg&bg set to black and white before you type your name?
