batch renaming

There are several good reasons to retain the name, or part of the name, given by my Canon cameras to my photos. However, I can't discover how I can use the powerful and flexible batch rename in the Photoshop Browser to include this number in my renaming schemes. Has anyone succeeded in doing this?

Photoshop's built-in renaming function is pretty limited. Speaking from a PS7 perspective, which to my knowledge applies to later versions, if you want to include the entire "document name" in the new file name, you're OK. But if you want to use only part of the document name, there's no means to accomodate that.

For considerable batch file (re)naming flexibility such as inserting the date/time a shot was taken and/or selected EXIF data into a file name, you might consider one of the many file renaming utilities available on the net.

Two (donation-ware) that I know of:
* The Rename -- http://www.herve-thouzard.com/module...hp?articleid=1
* Bulk Rename Utility -- www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk

The batch renaming in Photoshop CS2 does allow for retaining the file name in the metadata if that is any help.
