Fading Partial Pic

Ive Gotten a pic and wanted too drop the opacity down on half the pic.
I used Marquee tool and selected the area I wanted too, I know you can do Control,U and change the area with that. However I wanted too lighten so i can see behind the pic in certain areas. I know I can erase that area but didnt want too take that much away from the pic.
Please help

Re: Fading Partial Pic

Duplicate the original layer. Add a mask to the dupe then use a black paint brush on the mask to paint out areas that you want to see through. Lower the opacity of the brush to change the amount of transparency. If you use 100% black you will see none of the area, if you use 50% black you will see the underlying photo coming through at 50% opacity.
