i don't see those options, but thanks anyway. will go the long way round and open through bridge into camera raw

Okay, another go ;-)
I had a look to our MACs in company. At the bottom of the open dialog, select "all documents" or "all document types" and you will get another menu where you can choose Camera RAW from.
