Smart Objects and Photomerge

Hi everyone,

When I open multiple raw files as smart objects in photoshop (cs2) and combine them with photomerge, I would love to be able to then open that new merged photo back in camera raw to double process it. I convert to a smart object but it opens in PSB format to edit it.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

If anyone wants the address to a script that automates the process of opening raw files as smart objects in CS2 rather than placing objects pls let me know and I will post it.

Chow for now
BMV

Smart objects are largely a gimmick - I have no time for them. Just do what you used to do ... we've been making great panoramas for ages, and we never needed Smart objects before.

Re: Smart Objects and Photomerge

I, too, have the same question (in CS3). What I have been doing is to Save the new image (after Flattening) as a TIF file. Then opening it in Camera Raw. I have some reservations about this process but it seems to produce the results I am looking for.

I would, in any event, be interested in how it REALLY should be done.

Re: Smart Objects and Photomerge

Wonder why you are using "smart objects" here, which almost doubles the size of the single images and of course also of the resulting image, if not more.

You can open TIF and JPG with the "open as" command to reprocess it in ACR. Chose open as RAW and you are done.

@bmv
Since your image is opened as PSB (must also be stored as PSB, right?) I guess it has more than 30.000 px in either dimension or more than 2GB which is the max. for PSD. You might try to save it as TIF (4GB max) and proceed like explained above.

Re: Smart Objects and Photomerge

Hi Joel
where is the open as option?
I see open as smart object under the file menu in PS, and open with Camera Raw as an option in bridge. is this what you mean?

Either open with "open with Camera Raw" in Bridge or there should be an "Open as..." option in the file menu in PS (Windows - can't tell anything about MAC), no?

The keyboard shortcut for "open as" in PS is Alt+Shift+Ctrl+O.

Hi,
well, seems there is no extra "open as" command on MAC.
Found this in the internet, you have to make the best out of it, sorry can't prove it or help further:

"Note On the Mac, Photoshop doesn’t offer an Open As command because the Open dialog box contains a Format drop-down list that you can use to specify the format in which to open the file."

Hope it helps.
