Controlling mask opacity

Is there a technique in CS3 to control a masks opacity without affecting the layer opacity?

Re: Controlling mask opacity

Not directly with CS3 that I am aware of, however you can get the same effect by using gray instead of black. If you've painted with black already ctrl-click the mask then invert to select the black areas and paint over or fill with gray.

I think CS4 has the feature, however using the method I outlined allows you to be selective, so it actually gives you greater control.

Re: Controlling mask opacity

I suggest using the common trick in Elements: hijacking the mask of an adjustment layer.
The layer to be masked is linked to the adjustment layer (levels for instance, no importance since there will be no adjustment) and its mask is used to show the upper linked layer or mask it.
You simply play with the opacity of the adjustment layer.

Edit: I think this method will be equal to playing with the layer opacity. I would rather edit the mask with adjustments like levels or brightness/contrast. This can make the mask lighter or darker which is equivalent to varying its opacity.

Re: Controlling mask opacity

The Fill slider affects the opacity of the mask.
