Question Convert 77 dpi picture into 300 dpi

Hello,

I wonder if any of you knows how to convert a 77 dpi picture into a 300 dpi, without loss of size (height and width).
The pictures cannot be shot again.

I have only a laptop with me right now, so please don't suggest scanning the picture at 300 dpi.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Sylvia

Image
>Image size...
>>Make sure "Resample Image" is checked
>>>Enter the desired Resolution (300 in your case)

That's it. The image should become noticeably larger on your screen but will be the same HxW. It will also be blurry at 100% magnification and really won't be suitable for print unless you are using at a small size.

You did not say if you had access to Photoshop or another high end image software. If not, you can quickly download IRFanview and use it to do the conversion. It's free. Otherwise, follow W23's advise except use Bicubic Smoother as the conversion algorithm. Photoshop's bicubic smoother is about as good as many third party algorithms. I would not recommend buying any for this small an enlargement.

Re: Convert 77 dpi picture into 300 dpi

If the image is for print production whether you resize in an image editing software or send off the image as low res makes absolutely no difference. In both scenarios you are asking a piece of software/RIP to add extra pixels from the thin air (or rather based on pre-existing pixels).

Also if an image is for print production and the screen ruling is set at 150LPI (the printer's will know this) you can go as low as 225ppi for the resolution without loss of quality. To get the correct resolution of your images you have to multiply the screen ruling value with 1.5-2.

Re: Convert 77 dpi picture into 300 dpi

Thank you all for your help. The images look identical once imported in a Word document, so I guess this will work.

TommyO, sorry for not mentioning that I work with Photoshop, but since it's in the Photoshop Help section I thought it would be clear that I do work with Photoshop.

Thanks again to all of you

Sylvia

Re: Convert 77 dpi picture into 300 dpi

No, Aalandriel, I was just making sure the pictures would be the same size and quality as the ones in my original Word document.
Some of my tutorials are going to be printed in a Photoshop magazine, which is why I have to convert them to 300 dpi pictures.
Thanks again,
Sylvia
