How to pull someone out of a picture?

I am trying to put a collage together for my basketball team. What is the best way to pull people out of action shots from sports? I am having a hard time not getting the edges looking to soft.

HELP!

Did you try using the Feather feature on the mask? Perhaps 3-to-4 pixels.

What form of selection are you using? There are multiple ways of selection, some better at specific extractions. Can you post one of the originals b4 extraction... this would narrow down to the best method.

Feathering will make it softer, but the selection itself needs to be right.

I have tried extraction. but is looks jagged to me so I don't know if I am doing it correctly. I have also used the magic wand tool.
Here is a picture.
I know they are soft on the edge but you still should be able to extract shouldn't you?
