making selection for Cutout

Ok ive tried too take my granddaughter out of a picture too place in another background. I use the quick select tool in cs5 and then refine edges.
Problem is: I click on Smart radius and raise it too like 7 then, when I use the refine radius brush it takes away the picture edge and not the backbround.
I have corners of her face missing and some of the back part of her shoes.
Can you help me on adjusting the edge of pic im trying too cutout.

Re: making selection for Cutout

Although a little hard to understand what's happening... it sounds like you did not invert your selection. Or, you are trying to use the tool to actually remove the background, which it is not designed to do.

If you use the Quick Select tool to select the girl, refine very slightly to get her edges tightened up, then copy her to a new layer. Now you can add a new background to a layer on top and move either layer around to your liking.

Or, use the Quick Select tool to select the girl, invert the selection, now the background is selected. You can delete it, which will leave the girl on a transparent background. Or, you can copy the background to a new layer and alter it, move it, etc.

Well shoot me for a blasst. I dug a little deeper and realized that this tool has been available for some time and here I was still doing it the old way with the lasso tool. What a boon the "new" one is.
