How to Make Layers be Adjacent to each other?

Hi,

If:
  • you have two layers and
  • you increase the Canvas width or height to double, e.g. from 800 pixels wide to 1600 pixels wide
Then:
  • Is there a way to make one layer move over to be exactly adjacent to the other layer?
...so that pixels 1-800 are from Layer 1 and pixels 801-1600 are from Layer 2?

You can drag it with the Move tool manually and fiddle with it at high magnification to get it into the right position, but is there a more automated, accurate way to place the layers side by side with no gap and no overlap?

Yes, using your 800px/1600px as an example, you would first increase canvas size to 1600 width and click on the left anchor. Once that's been done select layer two or the one you want to move and hit CMND+T to enter transform mode. Up in the top left of the transform options bar you have the same anchor points as you have in canvas size, lock the same left one again then enter 800 in the box directly to the right of this.

This will align the left edge of layer two 800px in from the left edge of your canvas, which should join perfectly with the right edge of layer one.

Depends really if you are wanting to do this manually or as part of an action as there are other ways to do it.

Attached is a small screen shot of the top left of the transform options bar.

On layer 2 select the whole page then use layer - align layer to selection - Right Edge

Re: How to Make Layers be Adjacent to each other?

Hi Shaun,

Your method worked fine. I had to save a selection first before expanding the canvas size because if I hit Cmd/Ctrl+T (I'm on a PC) after the 2x canvas size increase it would select the entire 1600 pixels for some reason.

Also, for whatever reason, when I copied my background layer the white canvas copied, too, and the selection would take the whole 1600 pixels. After I backed up in History, re-did it and saved the original selection everything worked fine, I got transparent pixels in the Background Copy just like normal. Guess it was either a bug or I did something wrong inadvertently.

Hi Christine,

Unfortunately I couldn't get your method to work:

--Select the image area
--Layers > Align Layers to Selection > Right Edges (or left edges, neither one)

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Re: How to Make Layers be Adjacent to each other?

were you selecting the whole image - not just the content on layer 2?

Also which version of PS - shouldn't make difference but you never know.

No I wasn't. I tried your suggestion with the the entire canvas selected and it worked.

Ok, that's great. Now I have two ways to do this depending on what's needed. Thanks to you both!

I'm on CS5.

Also, simply moving a layer using the Move Tool (or holding down cmd/ctrl to move while on a selection tool) should make it snap to the edges. That is the quickest way.

With the Move Tool you will also have align-buttons on the option bar (along the top) - at least in newer versions of Photoshop.

Re: How to Make Layers be Adjacent to each other?

Hi Robert, you shouldn't have to save the selection first. I would do it in this order -

If image is flattened double click on background to make it an active layer

Duplicate this layer so you have your layer two, both layers will have transparency now

Increase canvas size, either using "Percent" @ 200% or your own pixel dimension

CTRL+T anchor left point, enter your dimension and accept.

If you were going to use this often you could record an action that would work on any size image and achieve the same results. This is were the method Christine has mentioned comes in handy because it doesn't rely on specific dimensions, rather than explain it all again I've made the actin for you, you just need to give it a hotkey Grab it here -
