Color replacement tool - what am I doing wrong????

Hi all,
I have been trying to use the color replacement tool and it is acting up on me.. The image is set to RGB with the tool selected. When I select the color I would like to replace the existing color with, it shows up as it should in the swatch panel on the toolbar menu. But when I click on the image to change the existing color to the one I've selected, the color is like a light hue of the color I want, a bit luminescent and dull. For example dark green would be applied as light luminous green dark red asligh luminous pink etc....

I've tried a lot of things (i.e clicked a lot of buttons) but nothing seems to change! Please help!

Much appreciated

Re: Color replacement tool - what am I doing wrong

The tool replaces color, but in a manner that is similar to you adding a new color layer set to color blend mode. That means if you try to replace dark black with very light green, the result will be gray with perhaps a slight light greenish hue. So you results depend on the amount of color and brightness of the surce. The tool does not replace color as if it were in normal blend mode.

Re: Color replacement tool - what am I doing wrong

Thanks for your reply ) I had a feeling that might be the case.. but I saw some examples in videos and such, where the desired color has been successfully transferred to the desired surface.. and if the results are so out of the user's control and will come out according to the elements in the image that can't be changed, then what's the point of the tool? Are there any other suggestions?
Thanks very much

There are a number of different ways to change color depending on what you are trying to change and to what? I suggest that you post here a sample of what you want to change and you will receive some suggestions specific to your goal.

Re: Color replacement tool - what am I doing wrong

Hi there
Thanks for the suggestion! Here is the attachment of the image I want to change the colour of. It's just a plain white dinner plate and I didn't bother attaching any colour swatches because it wouldn't change to ANY colour properly.. especially dark colours like dark red/dark blue etc..
Sorry I attached it as a jpeg because the psd file was too large.
Thanks so much!

Since the surface is really bright, what you probably need to do is first darken the overall plate (keep some of the highlights brighter than the rest) and use any tool you like for the color.
I'd use a curves adj. layer to do both in one step, but you can also separate the steps if needed.

Re: Color replacement tool - what am I doing wrong

Thank you!!!!
I changed the brightness of the image using curves and now that the plate is darker the colors apply exactly how I wanted them!
Thank you Der_W and mistermonday, you made my day
