New Adjustment Layers, no Default Mask?
Normally, when you create a new Adjustment Layer, it will link (attach) a blank white mask. I have never seen this before yesterday, but I have a student who's new iMac/CS6 install is creating the Adjustment Layers, but no Masks.

He can click the Mask Icon, and get a mask, but nothing I tried let it behave like expected. Did not matter how I created it (below layers icon, adjustment panel icon, or pull down menu), it was always created without a mask.

I tried searching Google, but nothing was coming up. Wrong Keywording? Anyone heard of this? A preference I never heard of? I was confused, to say the least. Any ideas?

Open the Window>Adjustments or click on it if it is in your palette side bar. Click on the downward pointing triangle to bring up the options menu and check to see if the Add Mask By Default is checked. If it is unchecked, every adj layer will not have a mask and you will need to add one manually.

While that falls under "painfully obvious", I will check again there tomorrow. Not sure why a new install would have been like that, but that is the most likely culprit. Thank you.

Re: New Adjustment Layers, no Default Mask?
It's always on by default. I have never seen it off in many many installations. So likely it was inadvertently unchecked. It's not really obvious because that's the way it has always been and no one I know would ever want to intentionally turn it off. Go figure!
