Transfer edits between layers in CS?

I messed up! I made a copy of a layer to work in to clean up dust and marks. I used the Shadow/Highlight tool to bump up the visibility of the imperfections and proceeded to spend a lot of time with the clone stamp to repair the blemishes. Now I want to remove the changes that I made with the Shadow/Highlight tool, but it doesn't appear in the history. Is there any way to do this? Or is there a way to copy all the cloning that I did in the copied layer back into the original layer that wasn't altered with the Shadow/Highlight tool?

No, not directly. That is why I like to use an adjustment layer - so that you don't lose it by accident, and it is simpler.

To deal with your current situation - you now have increased highlight and shadow contrast, you could do any of the following to reverse the look back to normal (these are not all of the choices, but you will get the idea):

-Run highlight-shadow again in the opposite direction.
-Curves adjustment layer(s), normal, lighten or darken modes depending on whether you want to affect the whole image or just the areas that are lighter on darker on your adjustment layer. Make the curve more horizontal in the areas you want to reduce contrast. You can use a mask to fine tune.

As a brainstorm although this is a lot more complicated than just reversing the affect with highlight/shadow or such, try changing the blend modes on your retouch layer just for fun ...

Thanks for the reply, Roger. I didn't think that I could reverse the process with the Shadow/Highlight tool because I had adjusted the shadow amount to 50% and there is no negative % to try to bring it back. After reading your reply, I decided to do a little more fooling around. I didn't want to change the mode on this layer as the effect that I was after was accomplished by changing the mode to luminosity. However, I was able to manage satisfactory results with the Shadow/Highlight tool by adjusting the highlights.

Does anyone know how to put a border around a canvas>? thin black line or color maybe too... or a little chunkier etc... Any input will be so greatly appreciated!!! Thanks, Beth

Hi Beth:

As a general rule it's better to start a new thread for a new topic. (Click the 'Photoshop Q&A' link above and you'll see the 'New Thread" button about 1 inch down and to the left. But no big deal... I found you.

Here are a couple ways to add an edge to your image.

If you have a Background-only image:
* Duplicate the Background so there is a regular layer above the Background
* Layer > Layer Style > Stroke
* Adjust the settings until you like what you see (be sure to choose option "inside")
* OK

Here's another way to skin the cat...
* Layer > New > Layer (Easy to delete the layer if you don't like the results)
* Select > All
* Edit > Stroke
. Pick a color
. Width - your choice
. Blend mode = normal
. Inside is a good choice
. OK

Hope this gets you moving.

Danny beat me while I was preparing some examples!!!

For image 1, I used the same technique Danny explained ....
For Image 2, I did something slightly different ....

Is this what you'd like to achieve?
