Well...I'll be an "Apple Crumble"

What a surprise...recipes at RetouchPro....!

For 4 (...generally.....!)

CRUMBLE:-

90g (3oz) unsalted butter cut into cubes.
1/3 cup of caster sugar (tut...tut!)
1 cup of Plain Flour (eg. not self-raising otherwise)
Cold Water....VERY IMPORTANT

FILLING:-

3/4 large baking apples (a tin of cooking apples will suffice) OR a mixture of apples/cooked rhubarb!
Peel and core your apples, cut into 1" chunks.
3 oz butter (AGAIN....!)
125g (4oz) dried fruits (your choice)
150 ml (5 fl oz) dry cider (optional)

Filling:- Peel and core apples, cut into 1" cubes. Heat large pan, gently melt butter, add ALL the filling ingredients and cook, stirring gently, allowing the apples to soften.

Crumble:- Work the butter, flour and sugar between your fingers until it looks like breadcrumbs (or use your food processor).

Heat a moderate oven - 180C/375F/Gas5 ??

Grease a square (?) container with a little butter/or oil around the sides and bottom. Put in your filling and use a spoon to even out. Scatter your crumb mixture over the top.

JUST before placing in the oven...sprinkle 2/3 tablespoons of COLD water over the top of the crumble. Bake until it just turns a golden brown.

Serve with ice-cream, custard or fresh cream.

Hi Jade, greetings from Sydney.

Thanks for sharing - I do love a good crumble...

And I bet your TIP about cold water is the secret to a fantastic crunchy crumble top (the best bit, the more crunchy crumble the better!).

My mouth is watering and this is not a figure of speech (I'm off to put on a bib right now).

Stephen Marsh.

Hi

Hi Stephen...nice to meet you! We have friends currently on holiday in W.A. (down in Margaret River wine area) they hail from Caringbah and due to visit my hubby and I tomorrow and stay for a couple of nights. We'll be whooping it up as my hubby turns 65 on Saturday!

Yep...that's right, the cold water is the secret ingredient.....LOL!!!!
I'm not the best baker or cook in the world but this is an old favourite from Scotland (from my MIL). Catch you later.

Regards
