RetouchPRO LIVE with Steve Caplin - 06/10/09

I'm pleased to announce our second RetouchPRO LIVE event. This time our guest artist is Steve Caplin, author of How to Cheat in Photoshop CS4.

Steve is a professional photomontage illustrator, known for his satirical and often political illustrations. He will create an original photomontage while explaining what he is doing and answering your questions along the way.

Doug, I was someone who enrolled for the last event but couldn't log in. Do you know what the log in issues were about? I'd love to attend this but it's heartbreaking to plan one's evening around it only to face frustration when the time comes.

So far I've only had a couple of reports of that. I'll call tech support and see if they can tell me the most common reasons this might happen.

Weekdays, to me, are bad because of the various time zones. I am not available at 1 p.m. on a weekday...how bout the weekends...or record it so we can check in when we are available.

Steve's in the UK, so we scheduled this first event around his schedule. As always, once we gauge demand we can add different times.

Speaking of demand, I could really use everyone's help in getting the word out. Not just about this event (though Steve has a lot of fans that would appreciate the heads-up), but about the entire RetouchPRO LIVE concept.

Please post in other forums, on your blog, your yahoo group, twitter, wherever else you interact with anyone at all that might be even remotely interested. The more interest you can generate, the more RetouchPRO LIVE events we can do, and the more varied our presenter list will be.

I just got of the phone with tech support and they said the most common causes for this are:

Security software blocking
Java needs to be updated (java.com)

Thanks Doug. I was running Mac 10.5.6, which was the current OS, but I see they just released 10.5.7, so I've updated (includes Java) and I'll try again with you on the 10th.

Can this event be captured via some video stream and later accessed with a password for those willing to pay but cannot participate "live"?

Oh how I wish I could participate in this one. Sadly, I'll be 36,000 feet in the air when this one plays out. I really do wish I could have it "taped" for later viewing.

I'd love to watch this one, I'm a great fan of Steve's and his 'How To Cheat in Photoshop' site. But it will be 5am here. If I'm awake, can I log on and pay at the last moment.

I will be recording the session, but it's still up in the air (no pun) about whether it will be available for later viewing.

Yes, this one sounds like it's at a time that suits me!
I really want to join, and will sign up tomorrow soon, but want to also be sure that I have everything set up correctly so that I can view.
Please bear with me if my questions are stupid:
I will be using a colleague's machine (better bandwidth).
It is running Mac OS 10.5.6 and Safari 3.4.1
(apparently Java and Javascript enabled (any way I can check this?)
It has 1 Gig RAM, and is on a 4mg line.

If I use earphones, I'll be able to hear what Steve is saying, correct?
What else do I need?

What was the deal with Flash? How do I check if this works?
Did you find a way to fix the mac users' question box issue?

If you can hear youtube videos through the earphones, you should be able to hear this broadcast.

Flash was purely a case of operator (me) ignorance. Flash no, java yes.

I didn't find a "fix" (because it's a bug in the software), but I was given a technique that should work around the bug.

I'm excited as well. Steve is a funny and charming presenter, and breathes Photoshop like air. He's also got a lot more experience at presenting than I do, so he can anticipate a lot of the questions before they're even asked. Just in our tech runthru I learned some stuff. And that's not even addressing his creative imagination.

While I don't know specifically what he has planned (I'm not certain even he knows ahead of time), I expect a lot of great advice about compositing, and not just via masks. He spoke at length about "taming layers" and "hiding the seams", so there's sure to be a wealth of interesting tidbits for every experience level.

I need everyone's help to publicize this. The only way to ensure RetouchPRO LIVE keeps going is if I can impress future presenters with the number of attendees. Of course a good turnout is also the only way to make sure presenters return.

Please post a link to the announcement page anywhere and everywhere you can, particularly in other forums you visit.

As I read thru this thread I see there are several people that won't be able to attend (including me). So you have to use your charm and try to get the guest artist to let you record and play back at a later time....

Since you have chosen to do the show on Wednesday, have a rebroadcast on Saturday. We on the rebroadcast wouldn't be able to ask questions but would still benefit from the show and the questions asked during the presentation.

I would be happy to pay the 10 bucks for the replay especially if they are as good as the first one....

It's still early in the evolution of RetouchPRO LIVE. Scheduling is ad hoc and experimental at this point. It's tough to find a time that's accessible to the US, UK, Eastern Europe, Australia, India, etc., all at once. Steve's in the UK and didn't have a weekend free soon, so I tried to hit around lunchtime in the US. Such is the nature of live broadcasts.

I got almost as many complaints about the scheduling last time as tickets sold, so I hoped this schedule would simply flip that around.

I am recording all the events, but republishing them has proved problematic, and I'm still working on that.

But I'd still appreciate any efforts to publicize this event, even if you can't attend. Getting RetouchPRO LIVE to be a success would infinitely enhance the chances of being able to view any single recorded event in the future.

There's a link on the event page translating the time into every time zone. I learned my lesson last time to stop trying to calculate for everyone, I just make a hash of it.

As for rebroadcast, I'm working on a DVD solution, but in the meantime we're planning on having as many events as possible live at least twice (with enough variations to make it interesting), scheduled for different time zones.
