RP LIVE - Texture Blending with Uwe Steinmueller

On our next RetouchPRO LIVE show, Uwe Steinmueller will present a technique called "Texture Blending":

From Uwe:
"This is a technique that uses two images to create a new blended version. One image (the main image) is blended with a second image (a texture) to create a new version. Texture Blending is a way to enrich an image by adding more or less additional textures. Often the sum of both pictures can be more than just any of the original photos. Texture Blending is part of a fun process to explore new visual possibilities."

I just finished doing the walkthrough with Uwe, and I was amazed at how fun his technique is. Our walkthrough ended up being longer than the show will be because we tried so many variations (we actually ended up with a couple he saved permanently, he liked them so much).

We'll be asking for audience input on this during the show, so you'll be able to experience the fun Uwe and I just shared.

I wish I'd have asked him to save some of the blended images we came up with during the walkthrough, so I could post them here. A couple of them are still haunting me.

It's amazing that such a (relatively) simple procedure could offer so many variables, and produce such different results. I could see how it could get addicting (Uwe admits he already is).

Absolutely a blast. I do this kind of experimenting on a regular basis and learned a lot from this webinar. Thanks for being a good sport. I did feel as if I monopolized the time somewhat. On the other hand, maybe not as there weren't many other suggestions or questions. Thank you for the very informative and delightful instructions today. It was the best.

One of my biggest frustrations for these shows is getting people to participate, both by asking questions and by spreading the word about the shows. People do help with both, but it's a tiny fraction of the people that actually attend. Of course, I'm really pleased so many people attend, but it seems a shame to me they pass on the opportunity offered by a live show by passively watching. And, if only a tiny percentage actively participate, we'd boost that number by raising the total attendance, which would require spreading the word.

I had a blast at the seminar yesterday. I love playing with new techniques and figuring out what different blend modes and/or filters and/or whatever-strikes-my-fancy-at-the-moment will do to an image. The hardest thing for me to convince others of trying is PLAYING with the software...

The attached has very little "gunge" factor, but I'm pleased with this at this stage (and I could change my mind completely tomorrow...). The blending image is part of the Indian Memorial at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.

Right. Surprisingly many things work.

Some things, of course, work better than others. As you pointed out, Uwe, the real danger is losing track of time while experimenting with different images. I'm still culling through my library in Lightroom gathering potentially useful images and putting them into a smart collection (by keyword "texture").
