RetouchPRO LIVE with Chris Tarantino "Surprise!"

Our first two RetouchPRO LIVE "surprise" shows were outright hits. Watching a retoucher as they open and react to an image for the very first time has really struck a chord with viewers. The feedback shows they're getting insight and self-confidence that no other show could provide.

Now it's Chris Tarantino's turn to be surprised. Watch live via your web browser as Chris opens and analyses a beauty image I won't even send him until after the show starts. He'll then retouch it while explaining his decisions and techniques, and answering audience questions.

Saturday, January 23, 4pm CST (see link below for other time zones)

Great presentation, I learned a lot.

I would like the presenter to explain a little more about what he is doing. For example, when he created luminosity masks. All and all it was well worth seeing.

Yes, there were some quick key strokes with creating masks that would benefit the unseasoned with reiterating and explaining. Otherwise an awesome presentation. Thank you Chris and Doug.

I always learn a lot from Chris. He is a superb presenter. His technical speak is pretty easy to understand and follow later in my own work, even though beauty retouching and wildlife/landscape photography seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum. This particular class was very, very well done.

Stick with the Saturday schedule...for me it works great! I work during the week and can never make the Wed time.

Liked the insight into his brush setup, and lash drawing technique. The colour correction side was very minimal as I would usually have a darker flatter image from raw to keep detail in shad/hi light and work it in photoshop more but this makes me think it would maybe be better to get more finished result from the raw software, although the image was very well tonally balanced to start with.
Great work.

I came in late and caught only half the show, but from what I saw, I was very satisfied. Wondering if someone who saw the entire show can comment on the first half that I missed. I saw Chris had a solar curve layer and also a gradient map. These layers weren't activated for the final edit, but what did Chris use this for? Just curious.

The solar curve was used as a visual to show up the larger imperfections like stray hairs etc, and the gradient map was used to show up the smaller imperfections and colour shifts.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE with Chris Tarantino "Surprise

It was very good, those that missed it missed some very good techniques.

Chris Tarantino was my first webinar, I learned a lot and would sign up for another in a heartbeat! Although watching a man of his abilities and credentials spend 1/2 an hour on D+B skin is like having Einstein explain addition and subtraction for 1/2 an hour

Recommendation: limit future elite level retouchers such as Chris to 10-15 min of their D+B techniques, thus allowing them to delve further into their retouching process.

The solar curve, define-pattern-multiply-paint and double luminosity mask sharpen techniques (to name a few) were highly educational.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE with Chris Tarantino "Surprise

Don't change what you are doing. As I said in the webinar, I also prefer a flatter output from an image processor. I did tweak the hl - 1/4 tones up a bit to flatten but left the shadow alone. This was mostly for the sake of time and the webinar.

However, that said, image processors are improving greatly and you CAN do a lot more of the finishing work in them. Each one has its strengths though so you need to experiment to find out which is better suited for you workflow.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE with Chris Tarantino "Surprise

The solar curve and all the variations i used in the webinar, is to show defects that otherwise might not be seen/hard to see by the naked eye. Variations were used because each solar curve shows a different spectrum and can also catch what looks good in another solar curve.

The gradient Map was used to eliminate visually the color so I can concentrate on fixing the density variances with the soft-light technique. Color can sometimes be a great distraction as well as hiding true problems.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE with Chris Tarantino "Surprise

I enjoyed the webinar, but I had many problems with the video; somehow, throughout, there were many moments when the video froze, or would just seat there, and couldnīt follow what was going on, and I missed complete sections, especially after the first few minutes. A few times the sound was weird, and I know everybody experienced that, but, mostly, it was the video that it just didnīt follow what was going on. If I was the only one having issues with the video, it must have been my connection.

Hey Chris, Great webinar! I have a question about one of the techniques you used. At some point later in the broadcast you did something to correct the over all color. Could you briefly explain what you did. I think it was something other than the technique where you used the red channel at 10% opacity with a difference blend mode to tone down the color. I believe it was more of a color correction.

Look forward to your next one.

Joe

I had a problem like this but I think it was due to having a bunch of other applications running during the webinar. It clears up if I don't have any other programs running. Try closing out everything during the event and see if it helps.

Could we possibly see a before/after? For those of us who missed it, would be nice to see if it is something we would be interested in the next rebroadcast.

I dont think a b4/aftr is really applicable to this particular broadcast. More was learned watching his process and techniques than with seeing his final results.

I don't agree, with all due respect, before and after is what it's all about.
