The chopping in and out sound issues are making this webinar experience extremely poor.

Yeah, I had to bail too. I was getting a headache. Very disappointing. Maybe they'll be some info/ summary available afterwards, or a credit towards a future webinar offered. That's too bad.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

Hi everyone. I was quite disappointed by the audio problems, but I did learn many things, and I'm glad that Gry made sure she fitted everything in, even at the expense of going overtime.
I signed up to the forums about a minute ago, and this was my first webinar. Do these problems come up much?

On a more positive note, Gry is very skilled, and it was a pleasure watching her work. I, however, am still very puzzled as to what the advantages were of using a colour fill layer for the bamboo, as opposed to a selective colour adjustment layer.

Also, I've forgotten - what was the blending mode for the green colour fill layer?

Wow, that was great, even with the audio issues. It was nice to see her work on the background and not strictly on the subject. Please have Gry back again soon!

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

I think Gry coped so well with the audio issues and despite the hiccups I still learnt a lot. I wish I'd seen her previous webinars. And also wish I could afford one on one training with her. It hink that would be so fantasic. Hope to see her here again soon even though I know she's busy. Thanks Gry!

That was the worst audio for any show I have attended thanks to Gry for working through it would be great if Doug could re-schedule another show with Gry after he has resolved the technical problems with the webinar company.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

I found it very informative and Gry was a real trooper with the audio issues. It is helpful just to watch someone work, that is how I first learned photoshop, and being able to see it on a full screen crystal clear is a great plus. Thanks for doing this!

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

Hi all

Thanks to those who had to bear with us on the audio problems. I have no idea how it sounded but I will make sure I get to sit through a recorded version. Still have no idea as to what caused the problem, but am sure Doug will figure it out.

I hope you managed to get the gist of most of it, despite a lot of corner cutting and a presenter somewhat thrown by the situation.

The blending mode on the bamboos was Multiply. Selective Colour (and Hue Saturation) were options I tested previously, but wasn't ideal in this case. Using a Color Fill is a very powerful technique, with the benefit of being able to edit the colour very easily, and the fact that you can amplify it, and then take it back. Combined with Soft Light, Overlay, Screen or Multiply it's an amazing colour correction that a lot of the very best retouchers use creatively.

Once again, I apologize for the audio and sorry I couldn't do anything about it, apart from turning off the GPU (thanks for the tip). We had actually anticipated some sound problems, as audio is the weakest link when it comes to these webcasts, and had quit all other apps and other things sucking bandwidth. In my case I now have pushed my options to the limits, with the fastest Mac I could lay my hands on and the fastest internet connection possible in my area. So I'm at a loss...

If we can troubleshoot this, I'd be happy to come back another time.

allthebest

Gry (logging out now)

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

audio was definitely a distraction, especially in the beginning. Overall, however, a fantastic show that provided tons of information/techniques to try out. Many, many thanks to Gry for sharing & to Doug for putting it all together.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

I saw your first webinar and audio was working fine. i blame myself for my own crappy connection too because screen pause multiply times (im talking 3-5 mins)...miss the whole color correct on face part would have been one of really good shows if it wasn't for audio problem. still, i learn some new tricks today and it was nice seeing gry working on fashion image with background...she did show how to retouch lizards (also apply texture) & bamboos.

looking forward to the next gry's webinar.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

I have a friend staying with us this week; and she sat in on the webinar with me. She has no internet where she lives; and this was a treat and a half. She kept saying over and over that learning techniques like the ones presented here are exactly what she needs to further her photography work. She was thrilled beyond words. Despite the audio problems, I would count this a huge success. So thank you from both of us.

Janet

If you think this webinar was good, wait until you attend one without audio problems. You'll learn so much more! I can't even begin to tell you.

Bring Gry back for another one, please!

Well done and audio hints

Doug,

Thanks for the efforts in steering Gry (and us) through the audio issues. I have had to demo products under those conditions and I really felt for you and Gry. I think you guys handled it as well as you possibly could - well done to both of you!

In terms of the audio, previous experience has taught me (as was evident last night) that the cursor movement vs audio quality points towards an issue with simultaneous streaming of video and audio. You will notice the same issues occurred during a zoom, even if the cursor was stationary. It is a tough one to resolve as it will probably not be reproducible.

I think the highlights for outshone the audio shortcomings, to summarise :

1. Use of screen mode dodge layer with colour sample together with standard d&b 50% grey layer
2. Grid warping in centre not on edges and masking back
3. "Unique" d&b work on eyes
4. Soft light layer at 100% with 0 sat and some lightness
5. Texture work
6. Colour brush on lips and adding noise
7. Bamboo range selection and colour fill/gradient in correction
8. Too many to mention, watch the rebroadcast...

Just generic highlights. Highly recommend this to all skill levels on the board. Hope this is not too forward as a first post here!

Hey Werner, well said, I agree with you 100%.

This is my 2nd webinar. Both times I pick up so many techniques. Thanks Doug, Gry and all responsible. Thanks for going the extra mile (time). You more than made up for the audio glitch. Looking forward to the next in your series.

Thumbs up Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

I could not attend this because I had to work that day. Hopefully the rebroadcast will be on a weekend and I will 'definitively' watch it.

I have three of Gry's ebooks. Retouching in Photoshop CS3 I bought a year ago and recently bought the CS4 and the one on Photoshop CS3 to CS4 to get me up and running CS4.

I wish I bought the CS3 book much earlier as I "learned" much from her ebooks. Her ebooks are easy to read and follow. I not looking to become Photoshop retoucher, but I am a photographer looking to improve my PS retouch skills on my photographs.

Do I say "learned" from her ebooks? It would better for me to say corrected my bad photo editing skills!

Another plus with Gry's ebooks is they are gorgeous to work through. When you zoom at 200% the photographs hold up and you can see the details or problem in the photographs Gry talks about. The CS4 book is 260 pages long, plenty of topics and she now includes for the CS4 ebook some sample photos for you to work on and follow.

I recommend her ebooks for any photographer who is starting out doing retouching with Fashion/Beauty photographs and looking to do it right.

Hope this help someone!

Bill

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Lizards" with Gry Garness

I know I'm a bit late in weighing in... and I did get delayed in joining in due to working on a deadline -- so I only caught the last 45 minutes -- but what a 45 minutes! My comment is:
Gry Garness was a sensational experience for me. Aside from being a superb technician, Gry was an excellent teacher by adding a lot of supplemental advice to each retouch point she discussed.
For example, when she pointed out how any Dodge and Burn also causes a loss of texture, it's like the light goes on in your brain in realizing how profound that single point can be for restoring the proper texture that is so needed to cloak retouching "side effects."
And, of course, then she gave a quick texture embellishing demo of how to add textures in the most proficient way.
Please get her back when you've solved the audio problems.
