RetouchPRO LIVE "Diamonds" with Steve Koshlap

On our next all-new live RetouchPRO LIVE, professional jewelry retoucher Steve Koshlap returns to show us how he retouches diamonds.

This show idea came directly from a viewer request, and I think it's a brilliant idea (see what I did there?). Keep those great show requests coming.

You will view Steve's full-sized desktop live via your web browser as he performs this diamond retouch from start to finish using Photoshop. Steve will explain what he's doing along the way, with me (Doug Nelson) along to forward audience questions.

Saturday, July 24, 4pm CDT (click link below for other time zones)

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Diamonds" with Steve Koshlap

AWESOME! Steve you're amazing, you make it look easy! As a photographer, it's scary how much I didn't know that I didn't know about retouching jewelry. I'm doing a bit of jewelry photography for local jewelers who (say they) don't have the budget for high-end retouching of your caliber, so I'm trying to provide them the best product I can by learning to do the retouching myself. Your techniques have been a HUGE learning experience for me. One thing I'd like to see, which is VERY basic for the crew on RetouchPRO (but not so basic for us photographers) is the best method for creating the paths and channel masks when retouching jewelry (especially diamonds and chains). Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Also, perhaps a webinar involving some gold jewelry, so far I think it's all been silver. I'm curious to see how the color is tackled when it can't be desaturated as silver can.

Glad you enjoyed the show. I'll pass your request along to Steve.

On the paths, he shared in his first show that he jobs that out to a specialty company (he didn't say which one, but he found them in our Classifieds forum).

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Diamonds" with Steve Koshlap

Thanks Doug. I already watched the webinars featuring Steve over the weekend, and did hear where he mentioned farming out his paths to a third party. I'm just hoping for some tips in case I decide to take on the task myself in the future. ;-)

Also, as much as I enjoyed watching the webinars and don't mind renting them for $14.99, it sure would be cool to have them on hand to refer back to later. Any plans for a DVD or downloadable content?

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Diamonds" with Steve Koshlap

Tony-
Thanks for your feedback and kind words! These days I do tackle the paths and masks myself unless time does not permit it. Patience, headphones and good music are a must!
Try to use paths as much as you can for accuracy, but there are areas (such as chain links) where a brush is faster, and soft focus areas where masking must be done with a brush.
I stay away from automated masking and other shortcuts- they usually can't compare to hand work.
You are right about handling golds. It deserves discussion. Next time!
-Steve

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Diamonds" with Steve Koshlap

Thanks for the reply Steve! Sounds like creating paths is just a tedious reality of the job. I need to practice with my pen tool. ;-)

I look forward to your future webinars, and hoping to catch one LIVE. There is limited (useful) information on the web regarding jewelry photography/retouching, so I'm glad I found RetouchPRO and these videos.

Cheers-
