RetouchPRO LIVE "Rough Skin" with Chris Tarantino

I felt like a heel titling a show featuring this gorgeous model "Rough Skin", but when I asked Chris what the primary challenge for this particular image would be, that was his honest answer. Besides, she's a professional model, so she knows she's gorgeous and her skin is no surprise to her.

Watch professional beauty retoucher Chris Tarantino live via your web browser as he retouches this beautiful (yet rough) skin, from start-to-finish (click link for before/after) and answers audience questions.

Saturday, August 28, 4pm CDT (see link below for other time zones)

First of all, brilliant work on Chris' part today. Despite the audio problems, your eye and process came across quite clearly and was a pleasure to watch.

For the viewer who was asking about color and frequency separation, one of the better discussions on the matter I've seen recently took place here. It's got all the normal ModelMayhem drama, but the information is solid (as is also usual there these days).

Sean

Thanks for the link and your willingness to share. I appreciate that greatly.

I have read that particular set of posts in the past but have yet the time to really sit and really thoroughly look at what's going on. When I do and if I can, I'll add anything to the discussion whether positive or not.

Best of luck to you with your retouching,

Chris

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Rough Skin" with Chris Tarant

First Thanks a lot for the Show as allways very inspierig

In the last month I played around with Frequecy sep a lot and one thing i obsserved was that on the HF Layer only the texture has to be , so i have to blur as littele as possible but the question was how much..so i made a little action...that seperates with blurs from 1 to 20 pix and to see that clearly i used a Lf layer blurred with median 50 pix...i used the Layer comps to switch between the blurs...so i see that different parts of a picture need different seperations.....

and i have found a littel trick that i used mostly for quick and dirty retouching and very bad skin.... and sometimes it works very fine and saves a lot of time...

when there is a good skin part i copied that part of the HF Layer to the Clippboard...

than New Layer on normal clipped with the HF layer...than I opend the Pattern Maker...use Clippboard as sample and generate a Pattern with Sample Detail around 10-20 ...

Than i put a black mask and paint ...Ok I know this is not High End but may be an Idea to refine......

This actually is a technique used by some highend folks - no need to be harsh on yourself for using it too .

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Rough Skin" with Chris Tarant

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the show yesterday is was really an eye opener for me in some specific areas, one question I still have about your brush settings, as you explained you mostly use one brush during retouching with spacing set to 10, I do remember however that you had "Noise" set to "on" as well - can you please explain why you use noise with your brush?

Thanks,
Raanan.

cheers,
wolfgang

I enjoyed the webinar. The information that Chris provided was useful and informative, especially, for me, the feedback on sharpening. I would highly recommend this webinar.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Rough Skin" with Chris Tarant

thanx for the very good webinar.
I really enjoyed it and did learn some new stuff.

I got some questions:
- What kind of wacom tablett do you use, Chris?
would you recommend an A4 or A3- format to work with?

- Is there a viedeofile to see how you are doing the liquefy-process at 72dpi to create a larger tool.
I did not quite get it during the webinar.

-concerning the 50% grey layer:
how do you desaturate the white brush color?
you are picking the lightest color in the picture and then?
what are the settings for the colorpicker, 5x5 pixels or smaller?

- how many people did attend the webinar

Best from Germany, Lena

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Rough Skin" with Chris Tarant

Lena

I use an Intuos 3 tablet. The 9x12. I will soon be picking up a Intuos 4 but the smaller size. I don't really use the entire tablet since I am in mouse mode and not pen mode.

No there is not a video of the liquify process, at least of me doing it. But its not difficult. Just duplicate the layer as a new file and then change the dpi to 72 or 100. Save the mesh file and close the duplicate. On the original layer apply the mesh using liquify. IF you go to this url.... http://www.pmai.org/content.aspx?id=9970...and scroll dow to July of 2008 I have a tutorial posted that goes through the steps.

To desaturate the color you have picked for light color, simply double click on the color in the toolbar at the bottom. You'll see variations of different color spaces. You can change it one of two ways. Click the radio button labeled "s" and lower the number in that square or slide the arrows in the color bar to get the desired result.
Pick the lightest SKIN color. Not the lightest color in the image.

My color picker is set to the smallest setting most of the time...never more than 5x5 though.

Hope this all helps. Good luck.

Chris
