This show will be of interest far broader than just the retouching community, so please let your friends in the photography forums know about it.

Still time to invite friends from other sites. Larger audiences mean more questions which means a better show.

For those looking for the “ink density” test document I used in the presentation to gauge the linearity of output, here’s the link:

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Inkjet Printing" w/Andrew Rod

Andrew, thanks for another great presentation! A question about the 180-480 PPI print resolution range. I know that this presentation was from an Epson perspective (720, 1440, 2880 DPI), but my HP has a DPI of 600 at it's Best setting, and 1200 at its Maximum DPI setting. Should I modify that PPI range based on this? (I usually print larger photos with the Maximum DPI setting, smaller prints using the Best setting.)

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "Inkjet Printing" w/Andrew Rod

I suspect all the printers are about the same in terms of their stated DPI and the PPI you send (there isn’t a 1:1 relationship). IOW, you don’t want nor need to send 720/1440/2280 PPI to the Epson even though that is the output in terms of dots per inch it will produce FROM the data. The same should be true for HP and Canon. Does the 180-480 range still apply? Not sure (it could be 200-360 etc). I’d certainly give it a try. I think of the 600 vs. 1200 in your case as “good and best” or for Epson, good, better, best. Lower DPI, faster printing (for proof sheets or when you have to crank out 100 5x7’s, probably fine). Otherwise I always select the highest value I can and send off data at the size I wish while making sure I fall within that 180-480 range. Based on printers I’ve used in the past (that old Kodak dye sub), 200ppi would be my guess to the lowest PPI to send to printers other than Epson if I had to make a guess. The Kodak was actually 203! Why? Based on that technology and at the time, this was what Kodak found was the minimum DPI you should send to that printer for quality printing and its actual output rez was 203dpi.

Usually people are working at the lower, not higher limits when making prints. That is, they want a big print and may not have enough pixels. Again, if you set the size you want in Photoshop and (outside an Epson printer), you find the PPI of your document falls below (lets say) 200, interpolate up using BiCubic Smoother to 200 but no more and make the print. In the case of the Epson, they suggest not sending more than 480ppi to the printer. For other printers, if you have a big honking high rez file going off to a small print and the PPI goes above 480, give it a try, might be fine or just sample down as more data while not necessary detrimental is overkill.
